We are Rincklake | Portrait Painting in the Selfie Age

Exhibition 19.06. - 11.09.2022

In a joint special exhibition, Museum Abtei Liesborn, Kulturgut Haus Nottbeck and Haus Harkotten von Korff are bringing portrait painting back to life and juxtaposing it with today's selfie culture. The focus is not only on Rincklake's artistic work, but also on the attitude to life around 1800 and the special significance of literature for portrait painting at that time. Each of the differently oriented houses looks at the common theme from a different angle.

Johann Christoph Rincklake

Johann Christoph Rincklake (1764-1813) is considered the most important portrait painter in Westphalia. It is impossible to imagine the castles and palaces of Münsterland without his works, where they still hang in large numbers. Based in Münster, he shaped the portrait art of this region around 1800 and was extraordinarily successful as a commissioned painter for the nobility and the upper middle classes.

How did Rincklake manage to hold his own against his competitors to such an extent that he is still considered THE portrait painter of Westphalia today? And who were actually his competitors? These questions are addressed in the exhibition at Museum Abtei Liesborn, which brings together works by the great master of portrait painting as well as works by his teachers and models and by his competitors, who are largely unknown today. The exhibition not only takes a look at Rincklake's special significance for the Münsterland region, but equally at the thoughts and needs of a society that then as now longs for illustration.

The Literaturmuseum Haus Nottbeck sets two accents in its Rincklake homage. On the one hand, Rincklake's visual work is set in relation to the literature of his time, which partly puts his artistic work in a different light - we are confronted with a personality whose work can be located between conformity but also progressiveness. The second accent is devoted to the theme of self-dramatisation. Whereas in the 1800s people had themselves portrayed by a portrait painter, today people take a selfie to reveal something about themselves. In such contexts, the Literature Museum invites authors and readers to talk about their passion for literature in video snippets. At the same time, literature fans can have their picture taken with their favourite book.

Harkotten Manor

Portraits of members of the Baron von Korff family painted by Rincklake can be seen at Harkotten in their domestic environment - in the classical manor house built from 1806 onwards. Who got to see the portraits and where? How did the sitters allow themselves to be staged? To what extent did their fashionable clothing serve as a statement? What is particularly exciting is that the portraits were already reproduced at that time and served as a means of communication. In the historical ambience, the sitters come to life. Personal documents, letters and poems conveyed through the media make the visit an emotional experience.
