Spring in the Münsterland

Photo spot #1 | Blossom at Westerwinkel Castle

Westerwinkel Castle is well hidden behind tall trees just a few kilometres from Ascheberg. The spring splendour around the castle is not yet visible on the way there. The next sight at the castle will delight you all the more. The pink blossoms of the cherry trees, accompanied by the delicate white of numerous fruit trees, sway romantically in the wind. The interplay with the lush green of the park and the light sandstone walls of the castle creates a unique painting.

Insider tip: Around Westerwinkel Castle, numerous rape fields enchant with their yellow blossoms.

Photo spot #2 | The colourful balcony of Münsterland

Romantic half-timbered houses, winding alleys and a breathtaking location above the Münsterland. The small town of Tecklenburg is not called the "balcony of Münsterland" for nothing. In spring, Tecklenburg presents itself from its most beautiful side. Around every corner you will find new impressions. Sometimes tiny natural paradises in old stone walls and then again fantastic distant views over the entire region. Don't make a plan, just let yourself drift through the alleys.

The spa gardens are not to be missed, however. A wide variety of herbs and perennials blossom here between old trees and gnarled bushes.

Insider tip: Follow the footpaths through the dense forest to the back of the park. There, beautiful fruit trees blossom in an almost dreamy valley.

Photo spot #3 | Between flora and stork chattering

In spring, there is a rattling in the air at the Salinenpark in Rheine: numerous storks settle around the Saline and spend the summer here. The majestic birds have become accustomed to spectators, but they remain shy. So keep your distance when taking photos. In addition to the storks, a colourful plant world awaits you in the park: yellow daffodils, orange tulips, white flowering black locust trees, purple crocuses and much more. Take a break on one of the many benches and enjoy the scent of the local flora.

Insider tip: You can watch the storks not only in the Salinenpark, but also in the adjacent Rheine Nature Zoo. The Bentlage Monastery with its flowering orchard is also a stone's throw away.

PHOTOSPOT #4 | Cherry blossom in Münster

Everyone knows the famous cherry blossom tunnel on Heerstraße in Bonn. Why travel all that way? You can also experience this natural phenomenon in Münster! Here, too, numerous cherry trees unfold their full flowering splendour in March and April each year and transform some of Münster's streets and squares into a sea of pink blossoms. The trees not only offer you a beautiful photo motif, but also a moment to enjoy. Stop for a moment, forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and let the spring sun and the play of colours take their effect on you.

Insider tip: If you are looking for the perfect photo spot for the cherry blossom, you will find it in front of Münster Castle, at Servatiiplatz, in the Speicherstadt in Coerde or in Schulstraße in the middle of the Kreuzviertel.

PHOTOSPOT #5 | Flamingo Spring at the Zwillbrocker Venn

Flamingos in Central Europe are actually a rarity. Not so in Vreden in the Münsterland. Since the 1980s, a small but steadily growing colony of these exotic birds has been breeding in the Zwillbrocker Venn - the northernmost flamingo breeding colony in the world. At first, only the Chilean Flamingo bred here. Then the European pink flamingo joined them. Occasionally you can also spot the Caribbean flamingo and lesser flamingo. March is the time when the animals return from their winter quarters. Then the moorland also "awakens". A great natural spectacle as well as a beautiful pink-red photo spot.

Insider tip: For those who not only want to take great pictures but also improve their photography skills, the Biological Station am Venn offers an advanced course with a photo excursion.

Photo spot #6 | Plum blossom in Oelde

Every year in April, the historic castle village of Stromberg enchants visitors with a white sea of blossoms. But it is not just any tree that blossoms here in Oelde - it is the traditional Stromberg plum, which was brought to the region from southern France and Spain around 1790. From the high castle hill with Paulus Tower and Kreuzkirche Church you have a breathtaking view of the numerous orchards and plantations.

Insider tip: The best way to experience nature is on a hike. In about 3 hours you can enjoy the white blossom landscape on the 11 km long and signposted plum hiking trail.
