AMARO FREITAS

With his powerful presence and unique playing technique, Brazilian pianist Amaro Freitas from the slums of Recife has developed into one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz. His music is deeply rooted in the Afro-Brazilian traditions of his homeland - rhythms such as maracatu and frevo are combined with modern jazz, free improvisation and a strong spiritual dimension
His debut album "Sangue Negro" (2016) already drew international attention to his exceptional piano technique. With "Rasif" (2018) and "Sankofa" (2021), Freitas deepened his exploration of history, identity and Afro-Brazilian culture. His current album "Y'Y" (2024), inspired by a stay in the Amazon region, continues this artistic journey. He combines natural sounds with Afro-Brazilian and indigenous traditions as well as influences from the international jazz avant-garde.
Freitas creates an impressive musical reflection on the relationship between people and nature, on cultural heritage and a new, self-determined view of Brazilian music - intense, virtuosic and with a rousing urgency.
