The pianist and the dancer
He places an instrument at the center of a genre that is traditionally characterized by guitar, song and dance. Andrés Barrios, who comes from Andalusia, is rethinking flamenco. His piano playing is characterized by technical sophistication, rhythmic complexity and a high level of emotional expressiveness. He uses the piano as a melody and percussion instrument, which is similar to typical flamenco guitar playing.
His collaboration with the Mexican-born dancer Carmen Young Peréz shows that he does not want to break away from the genre. She complements the pianist's playing with her expressive dancing. Together they create a flamenco that alternates between tradition and modernity. Barrios and Peréz performed at the Münsterland Festival in Stroetmann's Fabrik and showed the guests that flamenco can also be performed with a piano.
In the afternoon, the dance workshop with Carmen López offered a hands-on insight into flamenco and folkloric dances from Spain.

THE VENUE: STROETMANNS FABRIK
For more than 100 years, Stroetmann's factory in Emsdetten was a place of work. After the B. Stroetmann textile factory closed in the 1980s, cultural and social life moved in with theater, cabaret, concerts, but also courses and discussion groups. In the atrium, the glass-roofed inner courtyard, the supporting association "Sozio-kulturelles Zentrum Emsdetten e.V." brings past and present together with the old factory walls.
