BigBand Dorsten
Four decades of swing from the Ruhr region
It is one of the most traditional and renowned jazz orchestras in the Ruhr region: BigBand Dorsten gave its first public concert in the spring of 1982 and has since developed from an adult-education-centre jazz orchestra into an ensemble whose reputation extends far beyond the city limits of Dorsten.
Musical director is Stephan Schulze, WDR jazz prize winner, university lecturer and director of the North Rhine-Westphalia State Youth Jazz Orchestra. On the music stands are arrangements by Francy Boland, John Clayton and Thad Jones, played in a sound that has its roots in Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Guests of the band have included Peter Herbolzheimer, Götz Alsmann, Greetje Kauffeld, Romy Camerun and Paul Heller.
At „Trompetenbaum und Geigenfeige“, BigBand Dorsten will perform on 5 July at the Agricultural Machinery Museum in Hörstel-Riesenbeck. Historic tractor engines and 20 swinging brass and reed players – an afternoon when industrial history and big-band sound share a Sunday.
