Picnic rethought - students develop innovative picnic equipment

Münsterland e.V. cooperates with the Academy for Design of the Chamber of Crafts Münster

MÜNSTERLAND/MÜNSTER. It doesn't always have to be the ceiling. For 20 craft students at the Academy of Design of the Münster Chamber of Crafts, the starting signal was given at the beginning of March for an exciting semester with plenty of picnics. The impetus was provided by Münsterland e.V., which wants to turn Münsterland into picnic country with the "Picnic³" project.

The association's assignment for the young minds is ambitious: they are to develop practical, innovative and at the same time sustainable equipment for the Münsterland picnic region. "It's about mobile seating furniture, for example," explains Melanie Schlüters, head of the Picknick³ project at Münsterland e.V. "But there's also a need for a pop-up picnic mobile or ideas on how to transport picnic equipment by bike." In Münsterland, picnicking is a way of life, Schlüters continues. "We here in Münsterland love picnicking. It is part of our DNA. That picnic can be more than the blanket is something we want to work out together with the design-studying craftsmen and women."

Last week Schlüters presented the task to the students. Lecturer Jan Eisermann's project group was immediately enthusiastic about the topic: "Everyone can do something with picnics and especially now in the Corona pandemic it is very trendy. It's fun to deal with a topic that interests so many people right now," said Clemens Mantei, a trained carpenter and designer-to-be (HWK). His lecturer is also happy about the diverse design task. "The project group in the fourth semester has to deal with special usage requirements, the possibilities of different materials, target groups and design strategies. That is a demanding task. Besides, the designers-to-be can easily try out the prototypes among their acquaintances. Because picnics are also very common among them."

Already on 18 June - the international day of the picnic - the 20 students want to present their products to the public. An event is planned as part of the Münsterland Picnic Days from 18 to 20 June at Haus Kump - the site of the Academy of Design of the Chamber of Crafts, located at the nature reserve of Lake Aasee. Locals, tourists, businesses and guests will get excited about picnics on the picnic days - with large and small picnics, indoors and outdoors, in unusual places and especially with good and regional delicacies.
