Region-wide bicycle rental system "Rent your MünsterlandRad" starts pilot phase

MÜNSTERLAND. To coincide with the summer holidays, a region-wide bicycle rental system is being launched: "Rent your MünsterlandRad". In a pilot phase, bicycles will initially be available at four locations throughout Münsterland, which can be booked spontaneously, quickly and contactlessly directly at the bicycle stand using an app. "We would like to quickly start a test phase to sound out whether the offer is also accepted. A retrofit will then follow in step two," says Klaus Ehling, board member of Münsterland e.V. "Rent your MünsterlandRad" is an initiative of the association and of MünsterlandRad bicycle rental.

"The practical thing is that the Münsterland bikes are rented exclusively digitally and independently of opening hours," explains Bernd Laukötter, owner of the bike rental company. "The customer scans the QR code on the bicycle stand with his mobile phone and downloads an app. With this, he can rent, pay for and unlock the bike. The only thing they have to do is ride it themselves."

Rent your MünsterlandRad" is part of the region-wide "Münsterland Castles and Palaces Region" project. A total of four bicycle racks, each with five bicycles, will be placed at important tourist hotspots, at the so-called "high-potential castles", such as Nordkirchen Castle, Hülshoff Castle or the Haus Nottbeck cultural estate. In addition, a bicycle rack will also be placed at "Göcke's Haus und Garten" in Wettringen as a tourist service provider. The costs for renting a bike range from 1 euro per hour to 13 euros per day. The test phase is being implemented with an app from the company MOQO.

Michael Kösters, General Manager and Head of Tourism at Münsterland e.V.: "For the castles and palaces, bike rental is an important addition to their mobility services. Because if the sun is still shining after a visit to the museum in the castle, visitors can spontaneously get on their bikes and make an excursion to neighbouring sights, to the next restaurant or simply into nature. This offer appeals in particular to the target group of those who decide at short notice."

The pilot phase is scheduled to last until October 2020. If the offer is well received, there will be an expansion at other locations with more bikes in 2021. "Then we want to include other means of transport in addition to the bicycle at the locations, such as car sharing, e-bikes or e-scooters," Klaus Ehling ventures an outlook.

In addition, the premium product "100 Castles Route" is to be further developed. The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and was developed as part of the Regionale 2016.
