Winter hiking around Telgte

Today, hiking is much more than just a pleasant pastime. It is good for body and soul and reduces stress. If you are looking for a relaxed hiking region without major differences in altitude, then you have come to the right place around Telgte. The highest elevation here is just 74 metres above sea level - ideal for leisurely walks or longer hikes on flat terrain.

What awaits you? A varied natural landscape typical of the Münsterland region: quiet paths lined with old hedgerows, wide meadows, quiet forests and charming farms. Along the way, you will discover details that make hiking here so special - be it a picturesque half-timbered house, a quiet stream or a picnic spot with a view.

A visit is also worthwhile in the colder months: with the short and long winter hiking tips, you will find two great routes for autumn and winter. Simply dress warmly and off you go!
After your tour, you can end the day in a relaxed atmosphere - for example in one of the cosy cafés, restaurants or inns around Telgte's market square. A hot chocolate or regional dish will round off your day of hiking perfectly.

The hiking routes

"Small" winter hiking tip

This route (marked in red on the map) takes you to the Emsauenpark. The starting point of this tour is the town hall in Telgte. Directly behind the town hall, you walk along the banks of the Ems into the meadow landscape, which has its very own charm in winter. After approx. 100 metres, you will see a map on the left-hand side showing the entire route. Here you can choose between three routes: The southern loop takes you past old oak trees, hedges and meadows directly alongside the Ems. The gnarled branches of the trees stretch up into the winter sky on this approximately 3-kilometre circular route and show off their leafless beauty. If you're out and about early in the morning, you might see wafts of mist hovering over the river.

Alternatively, you can follow the approx. 4 km long northern loop. After the second footbridge over the Ems, the circular route takes you past a bare floodplain forest and smooth oat meadows. In sub-zero temperatures, the areas are covered in a cold fluff of frozen hoar frost. If it has been frosty for longer, the first layers of ice appear on the ponds and pools. The trail makes a loop and takes you back to the starting point.

The western route is barrier-free and family-friendly. With a length of approx. 1.5 km, the route is perfect for a short winter walk.

"Big" winter hiking tip

This route takes you from Warendorf-Einen to Telgte. We recommend parking your car at the town hall in Telgte and taking the R 11 bus (Warendorf) to Warendorf-Einen at the Rathaus/Baßfeld bus stop. The starting point of this hike is the bus stop "Abzweig Dorf" in Einen.

From here, walk along Bartholomäusstraße to the church. There are two options here: Either you follow the road straight ahead (green line on the map) and take the old post road through the wintry forest or you turn left and follow the hiking trail along the Ems towards Telgte. In winter, the landscape here is almost mystical. Unlike in summer, you can recognise the different patterns of the various tree species. Ducks and moorhens make their rounds, chattering quietly. When everything is covered in hoar frost, the dry inflorescences of the plants look like filigree works of art.

At the campsite, the two variants of the great winter hiking tip merge and you walk along the Ems through the wintery Emsauen Park to the old town centre of Telgte, where you can warm up and fortify yourself with a hot drink or a hearty lunch.
