Villa Medica in Rhede

Right in the heart of Rhede, Villa Medica invites you on a fascinating journey through the history of medicine, health and pharmacy. The Museum of Medicine and Pharmacy is housed in a historic industrialist’s villa dating from 1923. Following extensive modernisation, it has been open since June 2025 with a new name, a fresh exhibition concept and a selection of exhibits.

The historic villa, the adjoining mill and the newly landscaped garden create a special atmosphere. A lift provides access to all floors. Exhibition texts in both German and Dutch also make Villa Medica an attractive destination for visitors from both sides of the border.

Rediscover the history of medicine

Your tour begins in the ‘Village Room’. Here, the fictional Rheesing family guide you through everyday life in days gone by and show you how medical care developed in rural areas.

On the upper floor, you’ll meet the chemist and the country doctor: the original fittings from the historic ‘Hirsch Pharmacy’ in Rhede offer a glimpse into days gone by. The dentist of that era is also represented here, with a complete 19th-century dental practice. 

You’ll then learn more about the development of nursing and the hospital system, including the history of hospitals. The tour finally takes you right up to modern medicine. A new addition is the separate exhibition on nutrition.

Market

At the weekly market, vibrant colours and wonderful scents come together. The stalls offer fruit and vegetables straight from the field, herbs, honey, bread and cheese from local producers. You can feel the producers’ passion in every product – sun-ripened tomatoes, crisp apples and artisan-baked bread. As well as being a culinary delight, the market strengthens the local community: you can chat with the stallholders, swap recipes and discover new favourites. It’s well worth a visit all year round, especially when the produce is at its best.
