Step by step through Rhede

When the days grow shorter and the countryside is bathed in warm autumn colours, it’s the perfect time for a little break in the great outdoors. Explore Rhede on foot and discover the R4 circular walking route. Walking combines exercise, nature and beautiful views around the town in the district of Borken.

You’ll start in the pretty town centre of Rhede – at the imposing St Gudula Church. You’ll start by taking a leisurely stroll along the Rheder Bach, past the lakeside park and then into the Rheder Busch woodland. On your way back towards the town centre, you’ll pass Haus Rhede. The castle was built in its present form in 1564 by Knight Lubbert von Rhemen. However, the origins of the complex date back to the 13th century. Since 1860, the castle has been owned by the zu Salm-Salm family, who still use the estate as their residence today. The castle and the park are not open to the public.

After the walk, the tour continues to the Villa Medica Museum. This historic building is a special place in Rhede and provides an interesting cultural conclusion to the tour. The museum offers fascinating insights into the history of medicine and uses interactive displays to show how medical care and treatment methods have developed over time.

If you’d like to get the day off to a pleasant start, you can optionally begin the tour with breakfast at Coffee Arts.

So: lace up your walking shoes, enjoy the fresh autumn air and experience Rhede on foot at a leisurely pace!
