Biometrics

Biometrics is used today in the field of identifying individuals. Either a biological characteristic (fingerprint) or a behavioural characteristic (gait) is used to recognise a specific person. Since biological characteristics are unique features, identification through biometric data is considered to have a high level of data security. Already today, mainly direct banks use the video-ident procedure to confirm the identity of the customer on the basis of a video and the corresponding identity card. This helps banks not only to protect their customers, but also to prevent cybercrime and much more.

You've probably heard of people having the details of their NFC-enabled credit cards stolen. Such a theft would not be possible with biometric verification methods, for example.

A simple example is the online banking apps of Volksbank eG and DKB. With these, the user can decide whether he wants to identify himself by PIN or by fingerprint. Another advantage of biometric identification, in addition to faster entry, is the fact that the user cannot forget his fingerprint, unlike a PIN. If the fingerprint is damaged by an injury so that the identification does not work, the PIN can still be chosen as the verification method. Today, almost all major banks offer a biometric verification procedure.
