Retrofit

Retrofit

Retrofit is made up of the Latin retro (backwards) and the English fit (to adapt). A retrofit is therefore the adaptation of an already existing product to meet current requirements. The modernisation of plants is a favourable option compared to the purchase of a new plant in order to increase energy efficiency, improve production quality, extend the service life of the plant and meet current legal requirements.

Retrofitting can be pursued through various measures. For example, manual machines can be retrofitted with automation technology, while the use of more wear-resistant materials is also referred to as retrofit.

Prerequisites for use

Mechanics of the old machine

The mechanics of the machine in particular must still be fully functional for use. On this basis, new components from the areas of control, drive or automation can be integrated when modernising a plant or machine by means of retrofitting.

Costs for modernising the old plant, safety regulations

While this method may prove perfect for a particular machine, it may be quite different for another. It all depends on the specific case. This also applies to safety regulations, because especially in the case of retrofits, the legal situation regarding machine safety and employee protection can turn out to be complex.
