"Give the gift of a picnic" campaign: Christmas with filled picnic boxes from the Münsterland region
If you're looking for an original Christmas gift that focuses on regionality and sustainability, the "Give the gift of a picnic" campaign is just the thing for you: around 50 city marketing centres, tourist information offices, producers, companies and manufacturers from more than 30 locations in Münsterland have filled pretty boxes with delicious regional and local products, including anticipation for the next picnic season. Münsterland e.V. initiated the campaign and collates the region's offerings on www.muensterland.com/verschenkepicknick. The website is constantly being updated with further providers.
The boxes with names such as "Winterzauber" or "Weihnachtsengel" contain, for example, home-made jam, honey from the company's own apiary, home-made mulled wine, speculoos and mini Christmas stollen. In addition to food, some boxes are also filled with Christmas decorations, candles or pit cloths.
Many of the products are labelled with the Münsterland seal: This recognises food that is demonstrably grown, harvested, produced or processed in the region. The boxes are sold directly on site, for example in the tourist information centres or city marketing offices of the municipalities, but also in farm shops, bakeries or concept stores.
The more than 1000 picnic boxes were once again handmade in the Alexianer workshops in Münster. The crates can later be given as gifts, used for decoration or even planted. Those who don't want to keep the crate can benefit from a deposit system in some locations and return them.
"It's now impossible to imagine Münsterland without 'Give away a picnic'," says Laura Woolfenden, head of the Picknick³ project at Münsterland e.V., who is delighted with the success of the campaign. "Every picnic box is individual, but the good mix of high-quality and locally produced favourite products is always impressive."
The growing number of people offering picnic boxes also shows how popular the campaign is. "Every year, new sales outlets are added in the cities and municipalities," says Woolfenden. "The frontrunner this year is Ostbevern, where interested parties can purchase picnic boxes from no fewer than seven suppliers."
