"Glass? Sure!" Online info date for catering businesses on the returnable glass system

Working group informs

Disposable - no thanks! The to-go business has become an integral part of many catering businesses. Sustainable action is also required in this area. No matter whether it's lunch on the go or a picnic in the countryside: environmentally conscious customers would prefer to do without packaging and plastic waste altogether. From 2023, restaurants, caterers, retailers, canteens and delivery services will also be obliged to offer reusable containers as an alternative to single-use plastic packaging when taking food and drinks home. The City of Münster, the German Hotel and Restaurant Association of Westphalia, the Münster Student Union and Münsterland e.V. are presenting an innovative, smart container campaign under the motto "Glass? Klar!", the city of Münster and the Studierendenwerk Münster e.V. will present an innovative, smart and sustainable solution for catering businesses in Münsterland: the glass reusable system by Relevo and Arcoroc. The next online info session for catering businesses will take place on 20 October at 10.30 am.

The glass reusable system works in a simple way: restaurants are supplied with reusable glass tableware free of charge and serve their food and drinks in it. With the help of an app, guests scan the QR codes on the dishes and borrow them free of charge and deposit. The dishes are also returned by scanning them at all participating establishments. After the dishes have been cleaned, they can be handed out again.

At the Alexian Hotel am Wasserturm on the Alexian Campus in Münster, the glass reusable system is well received. Mario Roters, deputy hotel director, is enthusiastic about the sustainable concept: "As a restaurateur, uncomplicated handling is incredibly important to me. The system must also be understandable and uncomplicated for the guests. The containers must not only be sustainable, but also visually appealing. Glass containers fulfil both aspects - that and the favourable conditions convinced me." As a restaurateur, he only pays a fee per loan made.

As one of the larger reusable system providers, Relevo is so far the only company that has dared to implement a glass reusable system nationwide. Together with the premium glass manufacturer Arcoroc, Relevo has now taken the first step and offers the first app-based returnable glass solution in Münster and the Münsterland region at conditions comparable to those for plastic returnable systems throughout Germany. Arcoroc developed the containers, which meet the special requirements for tightly sealed and environmentally friendly containers for use in a rental system. The advantages of the glass containers are obvious: they are hygienic and colour-neutral, do not take on any odours or tastes, are resistant to temperature differences of more than 130 degrees, ovenproof, guarantee more than 2,000 rinses, are 100 per cent recyclable and can be recycled an infinite number of times. The glass is transparent, so that the value of the dishes becomes visible. The specially tempered glass is durable, scratch-resistant, 30 per cent lighter than untempered glass dishes, easily stackable and leak-proof during transport.

Philipp Büning from Münster was one of the first participants in the pilot project. For six months now, the returnable glass system has been in use in two of his butcher's shops in Münster. "The system is well received by the customers. It is used every day. Our regular customers, who come for lunch several times a week, often use the glass containers to take their lunch with them. We are satisfied with the reusable system and want to continue working with it and gladly pass on our experiences to other catering businesses," reports the 37-year-old master butcher.

The initiators of Glas? Klar! offer catering businesses and retailers from all over Münsterland the opportunity to participate in the glass reuse system. The system will be presented at an online info session on 20 October from 10.30 to 11.30 am. Representatives of Relevo and Arcoroc will answer the participants' questions. To participate in the appointment, registration is necessary at www.glas-mehrweg.de.
