Münsterland Picnic Days from 18 to 21 June: Over 40 events and activities are drawing visitors to the region
With picnics large and small in unusual locations – and, above all, featuring regional delicacies – the Münsterland Picnic Days are inviting people to a varied programme of events across the Münsterland region for the sixth time, centred around International Picnic Day. True to the motto “Me. You. Us. The Münsterland celebrates picnics!”, locals, visitors and picnic enthusiasts can come together to celebrate the region’s way of life from 18 to 21 June. The event is organised by Münsterland e.V., and the first programme highlights have already been announced.
To kick off the Münsterland Picnic Days, the Stiegenpark in Heek will be transformed into a cosy picnic area on Thursday 18 June – with a cultural twist: During a ‘bring your own’ picnic, the two charming characters from Theater Moustache will use their street performance ‘Les Messieurs’ to turn everything that comes into view of their camera into art. Also on Thursday, the ‘Münsterland Summer Night Cinema’ takes place at Bentlage Abbey in Rheine: in collaboration with Filmservice Münster.Land, Münsterland e.V. is organising a cosy evening centred on the theme of myths, legends and stories from the Münsterland region.
Friday evening gets off to a relaxed, sporty start with the Sundowner Yoga Picnic in Münster’s castle gardens: under professional guidance, participants will get into the flow of yoga amidst the greenery and refuel with healthy snacks at a picnic.
On Saturday, 20 June, the idyllic orchard meadow in Ostbevern will be transformed into a dreamlike setting celebrating Scandinavian joie de vivre: Accompanied by atmospheric live music, Swedish Midsummer will be celebrated with a special picnic that uniquely combines Swedish tradition with Westphalian hospitality. Also on Saturday, the Wöstenfest in Greven invites you to a colourful family festival in the countryside – with a picnic atmosphere, plenty of hands-on activities and ample space to relax, play and socialise.
As part of the major ‘Münsterland Festival meets BurgJazz’ event, there will be an open-air picnic concert on Sunday 21 June on the grounds of Vischering Castle: The band JIN JIM blends the energy of rock with jazz, Latin and electronic sounds with an elegant, almost ethereal lightness – the perfect accompaniment for a relaxed Sunday afternoon on a picnic blanket. Same day, different venue: the idyllic setting on the riverbank at Füchtelner Mühle in Olfen invites picnic-goers on Sunday to enjoy a relaxed afternoon with live music from ‘Die Zwei’, refreshing drinks and children’s activities.
As every year, the BritPic in Bocholt and the Balloon Picnic in Telgte are also on the programme. And for those who fancy trying something completely different, there are various picnic walks to look forward to – such as a goat walk with a picnic around Haus Hülshoff in Tecklenburg.
Many of the organisations offering picnics at the events have been awarded the regional Münsterland seal of quality. This demonstrates how closely they are linked to the region: the Münsterland seal identifies products that are verifiably grown, harvested, produced or processed here. This means that regionality is also a key focus when it comes to picnicking.
