A lively journey through European cultural history: New brochure on the R1 European cycle route published
The R1 European Cycle Route is a real highlight among the major cycle routes: From London via St. Petersburg to Helsinki, the route connects people, nature and culture from ten European countries over more than 5100 kilometres. A new booklet has now been published to accompany the R1, presenting the 24 stops along the section of the route through North Rhine-Westphalia.
On the 345-kilometre section through NRW, cyclists cycle three of the six "cultural stories" of the all-German R1 section: these "cultural stories" combine thematically matching, consecutive stages and can be cycled as two- or three-day tours. They lead past regional cultural highlights and historical sites that bring European history to life.
The first NRW "cultural history" tour entitled "Palaces, castles, country idyll" starts in Vreden in Westmünsterland and leads over 113 kilometres to Münster through the Münsterland park landscape with its magnificent moated castles, aristocratic residences and fortresses. Travellers can experience magnificent halls, admire art and culture in old walls and enjoy extensive parks. Under the motto "Experience historic towns", the second "Cultural history" tour covers 163 kilometres from Münster to Detmold - picturesque alleyways, imposing half-timbered houses and lively squares bring European history and architectural culture to life in the individual towns. "Germany's cultural centre" is the name of the third, approximately 185-kilometre-long "cultural history", which leads from the famous Hermann monument in Detmold to Goslar in Lower Saxony. Along the ridges of the historic Teutoburg Forest, there is a marvellous view over the Lippe region, also known as the Land of Hermann. In NRW, the section ends in Höxter with its impressive Corvey Castle, a World Heritage Site.
The brochure presents brief portraits of the towns and villages along the R1 European Cycle Route in NRW. Information on the most interesting sights, accommodation, catering and leisure facilities along the route make the accompanying booklet a practical aid when planning your trip.
The brochure can now be ordered online from Münsterland e.V. at www.muensterland.com/kataloge and sent home by post or saved directly as a download. It is also available at tourist information centres along the route.
