The Münsterland Festival

Every two years for one month in autumn, the Münsterland Festival brings the traditions and attitude to life of a European region into Münsterland with music, art and dialogue. The artists represent the cultural diversity and current trends of the respective host region. The extensive programme is not to be found isolated in the region's large event halls and museums, but in special, often somewhat smaller venues - in historic moated castles, former industrial wastelands, exhibition halls and art associations, selected concert halls or theatres. The musical focus is on jazz, pop, folk and classical music and is complemented by a diverse range of exhibitions and excursions.

The Münsterland Festival part 11: 8 October to 6 November 2021

Alpine sounds without the altitude: The music and culture of Austria are the focus of the Münsterland Festival part 11. From 8 October to 6 November 2021, the festival team of Münsterland e.V. invites you to numerous events at beautiful and exciting locations in Münsterland, this time with the Alpine Republic as the guest country. There will then be concerts, exhibitions and excursions throughout the region that will take their guests on a cultural voyage of discovery.

The Münsterland Festival part 11 will start on 8 October 2021 with an opening concert at the Haus Nottbeck cultural estate in Oelde, and will conclude on 6 November 2021 with a concert at Burg Vischering in Lüdinghausen. Tickets and the complete festival programme can be found at www.muensterland-festival.de and below in the calendar of events. We will also be happy to deliver our programme book to your home!

From the idea to the sketch on paper, transferred to a printing block made of wood, metal, cardboard, linoleum or stone, altered in the etching bath by aggressive acid, deepened by multi-layered colour applications or expanded in combination with collages - printmaking was and is an exciting field.

The prINT printmaking project as part of the Münsterland Festival once again gives two female artists and two male artists from the guest country Austria (all currently living in Vienna) the chance to present their printmaking to interested people with their exhibitions in the barn at Kloster Bentlage and at FARB.

In addition to works that have been created in the past years, the exhibition will also show copies fresh off the presses that the artists produce during their two-week working stay at the beginning of September in the workshops of the Druckvereinigung am Kloster Bentlage.

Video animations are projected onto two wooden objects, accompanied by specially composed pieces of music that accompany and interpret the installation: The audiovisual installation SOULHOLES awaits those interested at the Münsterland Festival on 15 and 16 October at Galerie Hovestadt.

Video artist Francis Eggert and Münster video artist Sven Stratmann have created the installation with graphically abstract 2D and 3D video animations. The musical interpretation comes from the musicians Chris Hill and "Derkalavier", who each composed a piece for it independently. Chris Hill works mainly with drums, which he alienates using sensor technology and to which he adds electronic sounds. Derkalavier uses the piano as a striking instrument to produce a soundtrack. The result is a 25-minute Gesamtkunstwerk that takes the audience on an audiovisual journey without a starting or ending point.

The installation consists of two letters of the same size placed next to each other and hovering above the floor. These objects show two separate projections, which, however, also appear as a unit again and again by means of sound and image. This creates a permanent interplay of togetherness and separation.

With the start of the cultural development plan in 2015, the foundation stone was laid for raising the profile of the city of Borken towards becoming a city of culture. Visitors can look forward to an informative and entertaining city tour that introduces the key stations along Borken's cultural axis.

Starting with the FARB, the programme first includes a guided tour of the museum, which will be completed in 2020, as well as a visit to the prINT exhibition (as part of the Münsterland Festival). During the city tour, a stop at the 3ECK is invited. The 3ECK acts as a "test laboratory" for Borken's 3rd place, which is to make an important contribution to the cultural inner city development through the spatial connection of the music school, library and the gastronomy. Before the concert of the virtuoso duo - Marie Spaemann & Christian Bakanic - begins at 8 pm in the concert hall of the FARB, there is the possibility of a little refreshment.

Wolfgang Moser not only makes wine out of water, but also beer and loves to turn logic upside down and twist the audience's perception. The magician will be at Haus Marck on 16 October with his new show "Fingierte Wunder".

Wolfgang Moser is Austria's figurehead when it comes to magic, and at the latest after his victory in the RTL show "Showdown of the World's Best Magicians" he is also a household name among German magic fans. Where does the trick end and the miracle begin? He explores these questions together with the audience in his new full-length show. In doing so, he breaks with the laws of nature, turns reality upside down and transcends the boundaries of the comprehensible. With masterful magic and charming wit, he takes the audience on a journey beyond reality.

Music

Marie Spaemann on cello and Christian Bakanic on accordion explore the possibilities of their instruments again and again. Through the interplay of their different influences, they succeed in meeting the audience directly and touching them deeply with their music.

A cello, a voice, an accordion. The virtuoso duo from Vienna has a masterful command of their instruments and lets their history shine through in details. Moreover, Marie Spaemann and Christian Bakanic are particularly good at using different traditions as a springboard for their own ideas in an elegant yet determined way. On the one hand, their individual fusion of styles bears wonderfully subtle, chamber-musical traits.

On the other hand, with clear melodies, infectious rhythms and the soul in Spaemann's voice, it offers points of contact for pop fans. When varieties of classical modernism, ideas of tango nuevo, European folk and jazz are added, an impressively unconventional, poetic sound language emerges.

A total of 20 stations in the landscape trace the changes in literature, everyday culture and nature through the centuries. More than 50 authors, artists, scientists and experts have contributed texts, pictures, music and audio pieces as well as a film.

At the Münsterland Festival, the poetry path will be walked from Haus Rüschhaus towards Hülshoff Castle, where a concert by Sigrid Horn awaits visitors in the evening in the outer castle.

The Neue Wiener Concert Schrammeln play Schrammel music in its most original form, but in the garb of today. Countless old "Weana Tanz" and marches provide the quartet with inspiration for new things.

The musicians play old as well as many new compositions of their own and constantly refine their sound. It is the sound of Vienna, created in Viennese Heurigen pubs, appreciated by the most famous musicians, which they now perform in concert halls all over the world. Their tours have already taken the Neue Wiener Concert Schrammeln to around 25 countries, but they always come back to the Heurigen in Vienna.

The quartet was founded in 1994/95 with the aim of bringing more attention to Viennese folk music in the instrumental field with fresh expression and new musical forms. Since 2011, the line-up has included: Peter Uhler (violin), Johannes Dickbauer/Niki Tunkowitsch (violin), Walther Soyka / Helmut Stippich (chromatic button harmonica) and Peter Havlicek (contrabass guitar).

The Viennese singer-songwriter Sigrid Horn will be a guest at the Münsterland Festival part 11 with her trio at Burg Hülshoff, and her socially critical songs will make you think.

Sigrid Horn sings in a stubborn dialect, accompanying herself with ukulele or piano. Both spatially and artistically, she commutes between country and city and takes something of both into her music. Before her solo activities, she was the front woman of a band for years, with whom she performed several times at protest song contests, among other things. As a solo artist, she also ventured into other genres and explored poetry slam and hip hop stages under a different name. Socially critical and feminist themes run like a thread through her artistic existence. In 2020, she presented her second album "i bleib do" at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and was met with enthusiasm: the Viennese weekly "Falter" voted it one of the most important 50 Austropop albums of the past 50 years.

The radio.string.quartet has its roots in classical music, but the music of the string quartet goes much further. From the very beginning, the ensemble wrote all the compositions and arrangements themselves, creating a unique world of sound that inspires, touches and moves. At the Münsterland Festival, the quartet will be guests at Stroetmanns Fabrik in Emsdetten on 19 October.

The musical influences that inspire the radio.string.quartet are as diverse as music in general: they range from music of the Renaissance and the Baroque, the avant-garde to rock and pop music, and the quartet is also repeatedly associated with jazz. On stage, the audience experiences a sensitive and energetically charged quartet with a sound that is unmistakable: flattering, demanding, searching, wild, dramatic, powerful.

Its very special approach and the combination of classical performance and contemporary as well as pop-cultural influences make the radio.string.quartet the epitome of the modern and forward-looking string quartet in the 21st century.

The Viennese world music trio Cobario is musically at home all over the world and is thus constantly inspired anew. At the Münsterland Festival part 11, the Austrians will present their sixth studio album "weit weg" - a musical declaration of love to the world and to Vienna.

For their fans, El Coba (Jakob Lackner), Giorgio Rovere (Georg Aichberger) and Herwigos (Herwig Schaffner) have long been a cult, their music for the soul that touches and carries you "far away". Most of the year, the three adventurers travel around the world with two guitars and a violin. Formerly as street musicians, since 2016 they have been working on a highly official basis on behalf of the Austrian Foreign Ministry for world musical understanding. The passion for foreign countries runs deep in them and so they carry their musicality, their virtuoso playing and the Viennese charm into the wide world and at the same time have absorbed music and culture from 29 countries so far. From this, new songs emerge again and again, to which they can tell an exciting story on stage.

The audience can expect a cosmopolitan mix of genres and styles that sometimes sounds like a dusty South American desert, sometimes like lively Balkan rhythms, sometimes like the dolce vita of an Italian coastal town. Cobario sweep along and captivate the audience wherever they perform.

AVEC mixes up the international charts with her emotional and catchy songs. The Austrian singer and songwriter likes nothing better than to be on stage, and at the Münsterland Festival she will conquer the stage in the Großes Haus at Münster Theatre.

AVEC is an exceptional vocal talent who is particularly appreciated for her honest lyrics and catchy melodies. Influenced by her affection for prose, the lyrics are usually written first, often containing autobiographical parts. She is accompanied by Andreas Häuserer (electric guitar, piano, co-producer), Thomas Gieferl (drums, percussion) and Ross Stanciu (bass). Her single "Under Water" holds gold status in Austria. In 2019, after several nominations, she also took home her first Amadeus Award in the Alternative category, the Music Moves Europe Talent Award (Singer/Songwriter) and the Hubert von Goisern Culture Award.

The Austrian singer and composer LYLIT impresses with her powerful presence, with music full of emotion, with songs full of deep longings. Her music makes itself heard, imposes itself and cannot be integrated into the everyday noise.

LYLIT is strong in word and performance, her skill and virtuosity are wrapped in an intensity that is hard to resist. She can be experienced at the Münsterland Festival in the rock'n'popmuseum.

With LYLIT there are no half measures. The truth is simply non-negotiable, so she doesn't look for excuses. As an artist, LYLIT sees herself as a witness of her time; in her lyrics, themes such as feminism, sexism, independence and equal treatment occupy a central position. Full of dedication, LYLIT brings her stories to the outside world - subjective, passionate, demanding and always reflective.

The Paier-Valcic-Preinfalk trio presents world music and classical music with smooth tones of clarinet, saxophone, accordion and cello. In the process, the audience is enthralled and won over by the trio's passion.

No matter whether on the keys, strings or keys: The trio of Austrians Klaus Paier and Gerald Preinfalk and Croatian Asja Valcic offers jazz, world music and classical music at the highest level.

With these three musicians, clarinet, bass clarinet or soprano saxophone nestle perfectly with the timbres of accordion and cello. Thanks to their creativity, the trio always remains gripping in their interplay and delivers a musical arch of images that confidently combines different styles. The trio's performance is powerful yet fragile in its components, with plenty of room for virtuoso improvisations and soloistic highlights. In this way, the musicians convey passion and subtlety to the listeners and practise playing with contrasts. They succeed in balancing form and freedom, complex music and compelling melodies.

In choreographed images between dance and performance, the performers Lena Schattenberg and Charlotte Petersen from the Münster-based MNEME kollektiv present "Anatomie der Sehnsucht" I "Anatomie der Peinlichkeit" by Marie Steiner (Vienna) and Alexandra Rauh at the Münsterland Festival, a Münsterland-Austrian production: the audience can expect a double evening that focuses on emotions and gets to the bottom of their nature.

"Anatomy of Longing" shows basic, human drives and embodies the feeling of longing in an abstract and pictorial choreography as a kind of observable longing creature. The bodies of the two dancers are closely connected and make the inner body of longing recognisable from the outside. The piece is accompanied live by the Iranian-Austrian composer and clarinettist Mona Mathbou Riahi, who creates an atmospheric sound space that animates and interacts with the longing being.

In contrast, "Anatomy of Embarrassment" deals with everyday changes and disruptions in social interactions. The episode is dedicated to the limits of shame and shamelessness and offers the audience a multi-layered associative surface of a deconstructed embarrassment via body, language, video and sound.

The piece is a co-production with the Tafelhalle Nuremberg. Supported by the NATIONAL PERFORMANCE NETWORK guest performance funding dance, funded by the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, as well as the Ministries of Culture and the Arts of the Länder.

Buenos Aires has the tango, Lisbon the fado, Paris the chansons. Vienna has the Wienerlied - as an unmistakable expression of this city's attitude to life. And the Viennese song is alive! The audience at the Münsterland Festival in the Dormitorium Asbeck can see this for themselves live. With the duo Die Strottern.

For more than 20 years, Klemens Lendl and David Müller have been dusting off the Viennese song musically and in terms of content so thoroughly that a local song tradition has become music that is understood all over the world. Awards such as the German World Music Prize RUTH or the AMADEUS Austrian Music Award bear witness to this. It does no harm to know and like the original Viennese song from past centuries. But you don't need either to enjoy the two thoroughbred artists Klemens Lendl and David Müller.

The duo Die Strottern bring so much comedy and artistry that there is no room for pondering and questioning anyway. In Wienerlied at its very best, presented in contemporary threads.

More than two dozen instruments on stage, but only three musicians: this trio around the Austrian musician David Helbock is impressive, versatile and never boring. This instrumental masterpiece can be experienced at the Münsterland Festival at Schulze Frenking's Hof in Nottuln.

David Helbock's choice of instruments is largely limited to those with keys, and he likes to play two at the same time. Johannes Bär is responsible for the brass in the band, from trumpet and bass flugelhorn to alphorn and tuba. Andreas Broger, on the other hand, is the master of woodwind instruments: saxophones, clarinets, flute.

For the current CD, David Helbock has helped himself to his favourite jazz pianists and always arranged their best-known piece. The result is exciting, groovy versions of classics like Watermelon Man (Herbie Hancock) or Bolivia (Cedar Walton). No matter which source material David Helbock chooses: Over the years, a very unique band sound has emerged, which is as much influenced by Austrian folk music as by original compositions. With the band there is a rollercoaster ride of emotions - music for the ear and exciting for the eye.

FYRM constantly expands its musical horizons, consolidating and refining its own voice and approach to music. At the Münsterland Festival, the trio will meet the Austrian trumpeter Martin Ohrwalder at Harkotten Manor. The three powerful voices of Vusa, Ramadu and Blessings, a string quartet of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and Roland Guggenbichler on piano create the unmistakable sound of MoZuluArt. Mozart meets African musical tradition in this special crossover project. The project does not fit into any pigeonhole and leads to the source of joie de vivre.

A unique combination of traditional African vocal music and classical compositions: The internationally successful formation MoZuluArt shows what it sounds like when Mozart's Serenade in G major leaves its cosy surroundings at the imperial court and is inspired by the pulsating rhythms of the Ndebele and Zulu. "Mozart meets Zulu" brings all the qualities of MoZuluArt into focus, their warmth and their sensual as well as intellectual power.

In the bell city of Gescher, visitors can expect an intensive bell experience that can be experienced with all the senses.

After a welcome at the Westfälisches Glockenmuseum Gescher, the handbell choir plays a short concert to set the mood for the day. Afterwards the group splits up, but the programme is the same for everyone.

There is a guided tour of the bell museum, during which many historic bells are marvelled at and made to ring. Another highlight is the visit to the bell foundry Petit & Gebr. Edelbrock, one of the few foundries still in operation in Germany. On the way between the museum and the foundry, the public will embark on a soundwalk by Austrian-born sound artist Mirijam Streibl, who will bring bell sounds from the Alps to the city centre of Gescher.

The duo Sinfonia de Carnaval promises instrumental art-pop that knows no boundaries: elements of jazz and pop meet electronic sounds and the full sound spectrum of classical playing techniques. The audience at the Münsterland Festival at the RELíGIO in Telgte will experience the result.

With their new programme "Sweeping Dragon", the multi-award-winning duo takes their audience into the world of storytelling. With brilliant sound stories from trombone, violoncello, vocals and accordion, they create sometimes fantasy worlds, sometimes tangible sound experiences. Anna Lang and Alois Eberl capture experiences, dreams and fantasies in sound with impressive instrumental technique and creativity. The musical portraits, narratives and sounding snapshots find their musical expression in merciless grooves, brute drama, wide fields of improvisation and surprising spontaneity.

This trio lives European diversity. Born in different countries, saxophonist Heinrich von Kalnein, bassist Gina Schwarz and drummer Ramón López are united by their love of improvisation and composition. The three experienced artists, who are well established in Europe's jazz world, prove with their formation that the greatest quality in jazz still lies in the immediacy of the moment.

The audience expects melodic and rhythmic structures, surprises and the musicians' willingness to follow each other's playing at every moment and make something of their own out of it. Mutual sympathy and empathy, coupled with years of experience and enormous talent, is what makes this international trio so successful.

The quartet Purple is the Color plays jazz with an elegant touch. It does not remain classical, but has many interweavings with other styles. At the Münsterland Festival, the musicians will perform at the Gravenhorst Monastery and take their audience on an inspiring musical journey.

Purple is the Color understand in an exciting way how to build bridges and translate the different elements into a dignified note. Simon Raab (piano), Štěpán Flagar (saxophone), Martin Kocián (bass) and Michał Wierzgoń (drums) want their music to touch, release feelings and trigger something. And they do that in many ways. With beautiful melodies and harmonies, with passionate, playful passages, with quiet sounds and with spontaneous twists and turns that always lure you onto other tracks. Purple is the Color strike exactly the right note, inviting you from the very first second to surrender fully to the musical spectacle.

The virtuoso instrumentalists Wolfgang Muthspiel (guitar) and Thomas Gansch (trumpet) promise a top-level jazz evening at the Münsterland Festival performance. As a duo, the two musicians convince with dynamics and a multi-faceted programme, always spiced with a pinch of humour. A (Alpine) summit meeting in a class of its own.

Energetic and fast-paced, diverse, never boring: that's how the music of Thomas Gansch and Wolfgang Muthspiel sounds. And on top of that, they both bring a wonderful portion of wit and charm with them to Münsterland. Guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel puts a lot of feeling into his playing with soft and intense jazz sounds, but also lets it get dynamic in the right places.

Thomas Gansch on trumpet is the perfect complement, not for nothing is he one of the most popular trumpeters in Austria. He is not only insanely funny, but also insanely talented. Fast melodies, brilliant trumpet playing, and in addition, great entertainment - that's Thomas Gansch. Together with Wolfgang Muthspiel, they form an extraordinary, harmonious duo.

This band took its first steps as a three-piece, but in the meantime it has grown into a quartet: Marina & The Kats has been one of the most exciting and thrilling bands in Austria, if not Europe, for years. The audience at the Münsterland Festival at Grothues will enjoy an energetic show that encourages the audience to sing along.

Three of the four band members actively play drums. "Shared drums doesn't make it easier," the band says, "but it makes it fatter." Because that's what Marina & The Kats are all about: a completely independent sound that mercilessly drives the songs forward and ensures that no one can escape the groove at the concerts. The songs on the new album by the gang around bandleaders Marina and Thomas also benefit from this. The new record is raw, direct and wonderfully uncouth. On the other hand, the songs are of course also a musical reflection of the past year.

Reading

The Vienna-based author and cartoonist Stefanie Sargnagel writes radically subjective but also wise with a big pinch of cynicism and black humour.

Her topics are the so-called simple life, feminism, hopelessness or depression. She breaks all genre boundaries and achieves something on paths never trodden that you don't have to call a novel to be captivated by it. It is often hilarious and sometimes tragic. Stefanie Sargnagel is a guest at the Münsterland Festival with a reading at Pension Schmidt.

Stefanie Sargnagel is one of the most important Austrian authors of the 21st century. In 2016 she received the BKS Bank Audience Award in the competition for the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize. In October 2020, her book "Dicht" was published, which reached number 2 on the bestseller list of the Austrian book trade.

The orchestra's programme is dedicated not only to Ludwig van Beethoven's famous "Eroica", but also to two Austrian composers of the recent past. HK Gruber described his CHARIVARI as an "Austrian journal for orchestra", i.e. an "officially prescribed mask of cosiness [...] behind which Austria has learned to conceal its innermost reaction towards precisely its most drastic fluctuations in fortune and its complicity in some of these".

The Cello Concerto by the brilliant Austrian pianist and eccentric Friedrich Gulda is a single provocation: a wild mix of styles from beer tent brass music, Alpine idyll, rock sounds and a dash of avant-garde. Everywhere: an expressive and virtuoso solo instrument. Shengzhi Guo, solo cellist of the Münster Symphony Orchestra, shows his special skills here.

The conductor is Golo Berg, General Music Director of the City of Münster.

The event takes place in cooperation with the Draiflessen concert series meetMUSIC.

In the sound worlds between pop, R&B and future soul, the duo ELIS NOA presents songs full of intimacy and depth at the Münsterland Festival in KULT.

Elisa Godino and Aaron Hader are the heart and head of the Viennese electronic soul duo ELIS NOA. They met during their studies at the Music University and have been performing together on stage ever since. Together they write and produce songs in search of an honest reflection of their lives. At the Münsterland Festival in Vreden they meet the video artist Sven Stratmann, with whom they create an audiovisual Gesamtkunstwerk.

ELIS NOA's sound ranges from pop to contemporary R&B to future soul. Their songs are full of intimacy and depth, the sound is soulful and reduced, but also honest and moving. After two EPs and numerous performances on stages in Europe, the duo released their debut album "What Do You Desire?" in autumn 2020. ELIS NOA are currently working on their second studio album, which is scheduled for release later this year.

In June 2021 they were awarded the German Jazz Prize in the category "Band of the Year International", and on 6 November these Austrian shooting stars will be guests at the Münsterland Festival: Shake Stew will play at Burg Vischering to close the eleventh edition of the festival. There they will present a mix of hypnotic Afrobeats and ecstatic sound eruptions.

Hardly any other band has turned the Central European jazz scene upside down like Shake Stew in recent years. While the ZEIT called them "Austria's jazz band of the hour" and the NDR gave them the status of "cult band" early on, it has been clear since the awarding of the German Jazz Prize at the latest: something has started rolling here that has never existed before.

From the very beginning, the formation founded by bassist and composer Lukas Kranzelbinder has been surrounded by something mystical that ignites an evocative effect in the live concert: "The unspoken magic words are magic and energy - Shake Stew brings something cultic to current jazz, an enrichment!"Despite their unusual line-up with two drums, two basses and three horns, the band always manages to catch their listeners in a direct way and take them on a unique sound journey.
