Heubach meadows

The picturesque Heubachwiesen nature reserve near Reken consists of three sub-areas: Around 467 hectares are located in the Borken district and around 155 hectares in the Coesfeld district.

With its many grassland areas and shallow waters, the area is a true paradise for numerous meadow and water birds and serves as a breeding ground for them. For example, you can find black-tailed godwits, lapwings and stonechats here. Various species of toad and frog also feel at home here. In addition to individual trees or groups of trees, crested wheatgrass, marsh rudbeckia and the cuckoo flower grow here.

Experience the nature reserve

A visit is particularly recommended in spring, when everything is in full bloom and you can listen to the calls of the various birds during their breeding season. If it's not foggy here, you can also look out over the green spaces as far as the horizon. Simply marvellous!

How you discover the area is entirely up to you. You can go for a hike, a relaxing walk or a bike ride. If you would like more information, you should take a look at what the Zwillbrocker Station has to offer. They offer multi-day cycle packages and guided tours.

Protecting what matters to us

Hay meadows

The Heubach meadows are an important nature reserve for flora and fauna, and are highly sensitive to disturbance. Please therefore stay on the marked paths and tracks. Walking off the beaten track is strictly prohibited. Please keep your dog on a lead to protect wildlife and ground-nesting birds. Do not leave any litter behind and avoid making noise. Open fires are not permitted in the Heubach meadows. The Heubach meadows will reward you with many wonderful moments.

The best way to reach the Heubach meadows is via Maria-Veen station.
Trains from Coesfeld, Essen and Dorsten stop at Maria-Veen station.
It’s about a 15-minute walk to the Heubachwiesen.
