In the midst of wild garlic forests and right next to the"old oak of Ichterloh" lies this beautiful picnic area. Perhaps a nightingale will already greet you with its song at the entrance to the 230-hectare forest area. The Ichterloh nature reserve lies on the territory of the municipalities of Ascheberg and Nordkirchen in the district of Coesfeld. When you arrive at the picnic area, a vantage point awaits you with a sweeping view over the Münsterland landscape. Ichterloh Castle once stood at the foot of the hollow, but it disappeared after 500 years of history. At the site, you can cycle through the forest or walk across wide fields and farmland.

The car park for the Ichterloh forest area is at the junction of Alte Ascheberger Str. / Altefelds Holz. From here it is about 500 metres to the forest entrance, which leads to the picnic area. The picnic area can be reached from the forest entrance in about 1.5 kilometres .
The picnic area is located directly on the long-distance hiking trails X2 and X14 and is connected to the cycle path network via honeycomb 176/177.
The Ichterloh nature reserve offers many activities for nature lovers and families. Among other things, the Kaisermantelrundweg (4.2 kilometres) is signposted via the Schlösserachse project.
There is also an exciting"Geophyte and Herb Trail". Here, the numerous plant species as well as various orchids are presented. The oak-hornbeam and woodruff-beech forests of the Ichterloh are considered particularly rich in species. The occurrence of a total of five different woodpecker species is also remarkable and can be observed here. The circular trail is equipped with acoustic stations that you can call up and listen to on the website using your smartphone.
A visit is particularly worthwhile in spring, at the end of April/beginning of May, when the large stands of wild garlic covering the entire forest floor are in bloom.
