Gildehauser Venn Route

One of the most beautiful circular walks in the Münsterland region starts right by the Dreiländersee inGronau: the Gildehauser-Venn Route. Stretching 10.5 kilometres – or, if you prefer a shorter walk, you can opt for the 7.8-kilometre shortened version – the trail takes you right into the heart of one of north-west Germany’s most valuable wetlands. Passing vast expanses of heathland, tranquil moorland ponds and sparse birch groves, it’s a particularly relaxing walk here. A real highlight lies right in the middle: two viewing towers invite you to pause for a moment and let your gaze wander far across the moor. You can also explore part of the route by bike, as sections of the trail form part of the popular Flamingo Route. Whether you’re looking for a quiet afternoon or planning a longer tour – the Gildehauser-Venn Route shows you the Westmünsterland at its most unspoilt.

What you should know

The circular walking route through the Gildehauser Venn starts at the Brechter Weg car park in Gronau, right by the Dreiländersee. The full circuit is 10.5 kilometres long; if you’re short on time, you can take the shorter route, which is 7.8 kilometres.

To navigate to the paid car park, simply enter ‘Parkplatz Brechter Weg, Gronau’ or the coordinates 52.23779, 7.07705. If you’re travelling by bike, you can park it there too.

Along the way, the path takes you past vast heathland, tranquil moorland ponds and small birch groves, deep into the heart of the nature reserve. The detour to the two viewing towers is particularly worthwhile: from up here, you’ll have a sweeping view across the entire Venn. On the way back to the lake, the path takes you through meadows, fields and small wooded areas, where you can also enjoy the surrounding countryside.

Sturdy footwear is recommended; the path is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. As you are in a nature reserve, please stay on the paths, keep your dog on a lead and take everything you bring with you back home.

Even if you choose the shorter route, do allow a bit of time for a detour to the southernmost tower – the view across the moor is one of the highlights of the whole walk. After the walk, the Dreiländersee and the local restaurants are the perfect place to take a break by the water.
