Generation of hydrogen from waste

The thermal energy generated during waste incineration is converted into heat and electricity via steam turbines. The turbines provide the electrical power for the grid and hydrogen production via electricity generators. Since the biogenic content (e.g. wood, biological household waste) in the incinerated waste is around 50 per cent, the electricity generated in this way is considered green electricity. Appropriate approaches are currently being implemented at the MHKW Wuppertal and the RZR Herten, for example. Another possibility to produce green hydrogen in connection with waste is dark fermentation. Here, hydrogen produced during the fermentation of biological waste in biogas plants is obtained. These processes are currently being tested on a laboratory and pilot plant scale.
