Welcome to Steinfurt!

Steinfurt consists of the districts of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst, each of which has a town centre with many shopping facilities and restaurants. The approximately 34,000 inhabitants enjoy THE GOOD LIFE between urban cultural and leisure facilities and the vast Münsterland park landscape.

The lovable district town in northern Münsterland

The district town of Steinfurt is located northwest of Münster between Ochtrup and Emsdetten. Münster and Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) are around 40 minutes away by car, and the Dutch city of Enschede is just as easy to reach. Osnabrück is just under an hour's drive away. You can travel directly to Münster, Ochtrup and Enschede from the three railway stations Steinfurt-Burgsteinfurt, Steinfurt-Borghorst and Steinfurt-Grottenkamp.

Tip: You want to travel to another destination but don't have your own car? Then rent one from the car-sharing provider Stadtteilauto. There are a total of three car-sharing stations in Steinfurt.

By the way: Münsterland is a cycling region! 4,500 kilometres of cycle paths offer you almost unlimited possibilities in the city and in the countryside: you can commute to work comfortably by bike and go on great tours with friends and family.

Living in Steinfurt

Steinfurt consists of the districts of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst, each of which includes three Bauerschaften. Around 15,000 of the total population of 34,000 live in Burgsteinfurt and around 19,000 in Borghorst.

The heart of Burgsteinfurt is the historic town centre by the moated castle. In the centre of Borghorst there is a shopping centre and a pedestrian zone with shopping facilities and restaurants. The two districts are around ten minutes apart, with the extensive "Steinfurter Bagno" park stretching between them.

Even though rental and purchase prices are following the general property trend overall, there are still numerous niches to be discovered in Münsterland when it comes to building, buying or renting. Here you can find the average purchase and rental prices for a house or flat in rural Münsterland.

The city council provides information on its website as to whether building plots are currently available. You can also view the official rent index and use a rental value calculator.

Did you know...?!

The Steinfurt Bagno was laid out in the 18th century as a kind of amusement park with exotic structures and water features. Today you can walk here through extensive woodland and around a lake or listen to music in the concert hall; the meadows now belong to the Golfclub Münsterland.

Shopping in Steinfurt

Both parts of Steinfurt are equally inviting for shopping: In the old town of Burgsteinfurt and in the pedestrian zone in Borghorst you can browse in various shops, boutiques and concept stores with individual assortments. Large clothing chains, drugstores and shoe shops have set up shop in the Baumgarten shopping centre in Burgsteinfurt and in the BWS shopping centre in Borghorst. As everywhere in the Münsterland region, there are of course several specialist bicycle shops in Steinfurt with a large selection of accessories, bicycles and e-bikes. You can buy groceries not only in various supermarkets, but also at the weekly markets in both districts.

Tip: For larger shopping trips, a trip to the Designer Outlet Ochtrup, which is only 20 minutes away by car, is a good idea.
