A goal that tastes good: the ‘Bioregional Bag’ is available from Sparkassen Münsterland Giro
The Münsterland Eco-Model Region and Weidenhof showcase regional organic produce
Anyone crossing the finish line at the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro in Münster on Saturday 3 October can opt for a snack from the region: the Münsterland Eco-Model Region, based at Münsterland e.V., is offering a bioregional goody bag in collaboration with Weidenhof from Lengerich.
Whilst similar offers have been distributed to participants as sponsorship in previous years, the Münsterland Eco-Model Region is this time encouraging a conscious purchasing decision. The bioregional bag can be purchased directly in the post-race area for six euros and offers participants the chance to experience regional organic food and the value chain behind it.
The bag contains four products from the Münsterland region: a bioregional apple, an oat and pumpkin roll from the organic wholemeal bakery Cibaria, strawberry yoghurt from the Fockenbrock organic farm, and coffee with organic milk from the region. New this year is the collaboration with Weidenhof and its ‘Grüne Kiste’ delivery service from Lengerich. The farm is responsible for bundling and pre-packing the bags and will be handing them out alongside the Münsterland Eco-Model Region at its own stand.
“With the Bioregional Bag, we want to show just how diverse the range of regional organic products in the Münsterland is. The Sparkassen Münsterland Giro offers the ideal opportunity to highlight how production, processing and marketing in the Münsterland region work hand in hand to make such a range possible,” says Juliane Rabe, project manager of the Münsterland Eco-Model Region.
With more than 7,500 participants expected, the Sparkassen Münsterland Giro is one of the region’s largest mass-participation sporting events. For the fourth year running, the Münsterland Eco-Model Region is using this platform to highlight the link between sport, regional identity and sustainable nutrition, and to engage with visitors in conversation about bioregional products and networks in the Münsterland region.
Münsterland Eco-Model Region
The “Münsterland Eco-Model Region” collaborative project brings together the districts of Borken, Coesfeld, Steinfurt and Warendorf, as well as the city of Münster, under the leadership of Münsterland e.V. Launched in 2022, the project runs until 2028 and aims to strengthen sales markets for regional organic products whilst supporting the establishment of new supply relationships. For instance, farm shops, village shops, smaller supermarkets, staff canteens and school canteens are supported in expanding their range of bioregional products. Networking events promote exchange and are open to all regional businesses. The North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture provides technical support for the project. It supports the sustainability strategy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, which aims for 20 per cent of agricultural land to be organic by 2030, and is funded by the State Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of North Rhine-Westphalia.
