Driving forward the heat turnaround in Münsterland: Municipalities want to use their potential

Münsterland is Climate Land" initiative provides information

The heat transition is a decisive factor in achieving North Rhine-Westphalia's climate protection goals. The state wants to become climate-neutral by 2045. Around 45 municipalities in the Münsterland region were therefore informed today about the opportunities and challenges at the event "Shaping the heat turnaround together - because Münsterland is climate land" at the Chamber of Skilled Crafts Educational Centre in Münster. Eight cooperation partners had invited to discuss the necessities of municipal heat planning and possibilities of a geothermal heat supply and to use their opportunities. The event is a joint initiative of Münsterland e.V., the NRW.Energy4Climate state organisation, the Münster Chamber of Crafts, the Münsterland districts of Borken, Coesfeld, Steinfurt and Warendorf, and the City of Münster, and is supported by the North Westphalia Chamber of Industry and Commerce.

At the event, around 120 participants discussed potential and implementation options for the heat turnaround in Münsterland with the central key players as well as climate protection experts. Possibilities were presented as to how municipalities can make climate-friendly heat from renewable energies available to their neighbourhoods and households and through which measures heat energy can be saved. Representatives of the Ministry of Economics, NRW.Energy4Climate and Münster University of Applied Sciences showed what challenges municipalities in NRW will face in the context of the planned, mandatory municipal heat planning, and what support services are planned. In addition, the Geological Service NRW presented the results of a preliminary exploration for a geothermal heat supply in Münsterland. Initial measurements showed that there was promising potential for a geothermal supply in Münsterland.

At the event, the recently opened Münsterland regional office of the state agency for energy and climate protection, NRW.Energy4Climate, also introduced itself with its NRW.Climate Networker Christian Böckenholt. It is one of currently seven regional offices in NRW, located at the North Westphalia Chamber of Industry and Commerce in Münster. The regional offices are contact points for local authorities and companies in the field of climate protection and energy efficiency. Their climate networkers promote climate protection projects and act as a networking point between the district, state level and regional partners.

The participants of the event also visited the demonstration centre for construction and energy located in the Chamber of Crafts Education Centre (HBZ) and learned about efficient construction methods and regenerative energy supply using 1:1 models. The programme also included a visit to the "Green Workshop", the HBZ's training and further education facility for sustainable installation technologies such as heat pumps, biogas and photovoltaic systems.

The event is part of the initiative "Münsterland is Climate Land". It was initiated by NRW.Energy4Climate and is coordinated by Münsterland e.V.. 61 municipalities, the Münsterland districts of Borken, Coesfeld, Steinfurt and Warendorf as well as the City of Münster have been involved since the start. The initiative is a joint commitment to more climate protection in the region and aims to sensitise and encourage citizens to do more for the environment with the help of campaigns and events.

Klaus Ehling, Chairman of Münsterland e.V., underlined the relevance of this Münsterland-wide initiative: "It is five to twelve for our planet, also for our beautiful Münsterland. It is important that all actors in the region, politicians, municipalities, companies and citizens pull together and become active. The high quality of life in our region is one of the great strengths that we must maintain so that we can continue to live well and happily."

Ulf C. Reichardt, Chairman of the Management Board of NRW.Energy4Climate: "The heat turnaround is a very decisive building block on the way to climate neutrality. In order to support the municipalities in Münsterland in the best possible way, we are represented directly on site with a regional office. Our NRW.Klimanetzwerkers advise the municipalities in a targeted manner and also feed the needs back to the state government. We work hand in hand with our regional partners such as Münsterland e.V. to successfully implement the energy and heat transition."

"The skilled trades play a key role in advising and implementing the heat transition. Sustainable living and economic activity in the region can only succeed with the skilled trades. These opportunities should be recognised even more strongly by politicians, but also by society. However, the skilled crafts sector needs skilled workers so that it can develop this potential. More appreciation for vocational training is therefore in order," emphasised Hans Hund, President of the Münster Chamber of Skilled Crafts.
