Regional popcorn from the Ährenbrüder: eco-model region connects carnival prince Sascha I with start-up
Only a few days to go before the carnival in Münsterland reaches its climax again and fools parade through the streets to catch thrown treats. The Münsterland eco-model region, based at Münsterland e.V., has helped to ensure that these are also certified organic and come from the region for the first time on Rose Monday (3 March) in Münster. Carnival Prince Sascha I wants to make carnival in his home town more sustainable. To this end, the throwing material for his Rose Monday float is to come from the Münsterland region. Sascha von Zabern, Hotel Director of the Atlantic Hotel Münster, approached the Münsterland eco-model region with this idea to discuss the possibilities and how to realise it.
Prince Sascha I says: "I wanted to use products from the region for my carnival float. That's why I'm delighted that we found popcorn of outstanding quality from the Münsterland region." The advantage is obvious: regionality supports jobs in the region and the goods have short delivery routes.
Juliane Rabe, Head of the Münsterland eco-model region, says: "The enquiry was unusual at first - after all, it came from a carnival prince - but the idea behind it is all the better: making carnival in Münster more regional and sustainable is great!" The Münsterland model eco-region promotes organic farming in the four Münsterland districts and the city of Münster and also offers an extensive network of companies and businesses. She gave Sascha von Zabern an overview of the small but constantly growing variety of organic products in Münsterland - with success. Through campaigns like this, organic farming in Münsterland, which currently accounts for around two per cent of the agricultural area, can become better known and grow.
The result is impressive, new and exemplary: some of the throw material on the Prinzenwagen is certified organic. This includes organic popcorn from Ährenbrüder GmbH from Telgte. The innovative start-up specialises in regional oat milk and popcorn from the Münsterland region. "We have found an ideal solution with Ährenbrüder's popcorn. We hope that this idea will be continued in the future, because the Münsterland region has so many delicious foods to offer and could present so much more," says Rabe.
For the Ährenbrüder from Telgte, this campaign is also a role model for the current carnival season. Henning Fockenbrock is an organic farmer, one of the three Ährenbrüder and is convinced: "For us as a young start-up, this is a great opportunity to open up new sales channels and become better known. Of course, we were particularly pleased to receive the enquiry from our home town of Münster."
Anyone who wants to catch one of the delicious organic popcorn bags from Münsterland will have the chance on Monday, 3 March. The parade starts at 12:11 from Schlossplatz in Münster.
About the Münsterland eco-model region
The four districts of Münsterland and the city of Münster work together with the NRW Chamber of Agriculture and the Leader regions in the joint project "Öko-Modellregion Münsterland". Under the leadership of Münsterland e.V., the project aims to increase the proportion of bioregionally produced products in the fields, on supermarket shelves, on canteen plates and in shopping baskets. The project is funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Consumer Protection of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
