Hiking trip Kommiesenpatt - Hiking on smugglers' trails

Individual arrival at the Burghotel Pass in the district of Oeding. Welcome and explanation of the Kommiesenpatt with coffee and homemade cake in the cosy vaulted cellar. Afterwards you have the opportunity to take a short tour (approx. 45 min.) through the village centre of Oeding, first along the picturesque course of the Schlinge stream to the small evangelical St. John's Church built in 1825, which impresses with its graceful bell tower and simplicity. In the immediate vicinity is the traditional butcher's shop Rüweling, whose Westphalian ham on the bone has won several awards and is known far beyond the borders of Oeding. From a cultural and historical point of view, it is worth taking a look at the catholic St. Jakobi church from 1911 with its oak high altar from 1915, which was specially created for this church.
Depending on how much time you have, you have the option of extending the tour of the town with a trial run on the Kommiesenpatt.

A 3-course welcome menu is served for dinner, followed by a cosy get-together and "Klönsnack" at the large bar.

You can fortify yourself for the hike at the rich breakfast buffet and put together your own individual packed lunch. Then you choose your own stage on the cross-border Kommiesenpatt. The trail has a total length of 17.9 kilometres and can be divided into four circular routes (4.8 to 12.8 kilometres). On this side and on the other side of the border, the hiking trail leads along the former customs officers' and smugglers' paths and along historical border stones. The hiking brochure not only informs you about these witnesses of the past, but also about special features along the way.

Our tip: Combine your hike with a short visit to the Dutch border town of Winterswijk. On Wednesdays (until 1 p.m.) and Saturdays (until 5 p.m.), the popular lake fish and market takes place here.

In the cosy rooms or on the terrace directly on the Schlinge, you can end the day with a regional dinner (menu or buffet) and the "digestif of the house".

Strengthened by the breakfast buffet and with your packed lunch in your rucksack, you will explore the other stages of the Kommiesenpatt today. Or have you already hiked all of the 12 boundary stones the day before? Then round off your stay in the region with a walk through one of the nearby nature reserves. In the Zwillbrocker Venn, for example, the northernmost free-living flamingo colony in the world awaits you, but the "Korenburgervenn" or the nearby "Bekendelle" also invite you to take walks in untouched nature.
