Day 1

Arrival and northern tour (approx. 66 km)

From Coesfeld, drive in the direction of Rosendahl, past the former hunting lodge Schloss Varlar. Take a detour to the Vechte spring or to the Generation Park at the old Darfeld railway station. Further on, you have the opportunity to visit the pilgrimage church in Eggerode or take a stroll through the historic abbey village in Asbeck. Many buildings from the time of the noble ladies' abbey are still preserved there. In the Dahli village of Legden, it is worth taking a look at the church of St. Brigida. There you will find the oldest and completely preserved stained-glass fire window (choir window) in northern Germany with a depiction of the family tree of Jesus. The historic town centre with its burgher and patrician houses is also worth seeing. From there, the tour continues through the varied landscape back to Coesfeld.

The East Tour (approx. 50 km)

On this day you have the choice between two different tours through the Baumberge:

The first takes you over the Coesfelder Berg past the Gerleve Monastery to Billerbeck. There, a walk through the old town with the Ludgerus Cathedral, the Kolvenburg and other historic buildings is worthwhile. The next stop on the way through the Baumberge is Havixbeck, where a visit to the Baumberg Sandstone Museum and one of the most beautiful cemeteries in Germany is worthwhile. As the tour continues, you will come across traces of the famous poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. You will pass Hülshoff Castle, Haus Vögeding and Haus Rüschhaus on the way to Münster. The city offers many sights worth seeing, such as the castle, the town hall or the Mühlenhof. If you don't want to cycle back on the alternative route, after a stop in Münster you have the option of taking the Baumberge train RB63 from Münster main station back to Coesfeld (incl. bike transport).

Alternatively, you can take the following tour: Take the train from Coesfeld to Münster (incl. bike transport) and start from there via Roxel in the direction of Tilbeck. There you can spontaneously become a "barefoot walker " on one of the longest barefoot walks in Europe. On the way to Schappdetten you can make a short stop at the "Murder Cross of the Mersche of Tilbeck". The route then continues through the Stevertal valley past the Schulze Westerath watermill towards Nottuln with its historic town centre. Visit, for example, the shop of the oldest blue print shop in NRW or the late Gothic hall church of St. Martin. Then head through the Nonnenbach valley towards Coesfeld.

South tour (approx. 60 km)

This tour takes you to the southern part of the Coesfeld district. Past the birthplace of the beatified Anna Katharina Emmerick, the route leads through the Coesfeld Heath towards Maria Veen past the Brockmühle. In the village is the Mariannhiller monastery - formerly a Trappist monastery, today a grammar school and youth education centre. The route continues through the Granat Wildlife Park to Haltern. If you are interested, you can visit the Roman Museum there. The tour continues past the Haltern reservoir and Sythen Castle to Dülmen. There you have the opportunity to visit the Holy Cross Church with the grave and memorial of Blessed Anna Katharina. Pass through the Lüdinghauser Tor gate and return to Coesfeld via Rorup. Shortly before reaching your destination, it is worth making a detour to the Bischofsmühle, a watermill whose origins date back to the 12th century.

West tour (approx. 75 km)

On the last day, there is a detour to the neighbouring district of Borken. The circular tour first takes you to the Kuhlenvenn nature reserve, where a wide variety of birds can be observed throughout the year. The route continues via Velen with its castle, past the artesian well. The spring, which is used as a water treading pool, produces clear water due to the pressure of the groundwater and offers ideal refreshment.

The next stop is Reken with its tower windmill and the observation tower on the Melchenberg. Due to its location at an altitude of 162 metres above sea level, on a clear day you can enjoy a magnificent view as far as the Ruhr region and Münster. After a short ride you reach Maria-Veen and continue towards Merfeld. Not far along the route is the Merfelder Bruch, an extensive moorland and heathland with a wild horse track. With almost 400 wild horses, this is the only one left in Europe. The last stop before returning is Lette, where you can visit the glass museum, among other things. Through the farming communities, past the Femestuhl and the Anna Katharina Emmerick House, you return to Coesfeld.
