Bentheim Castle is one of the most beautiful excursion destinations in Münsterland. The mighty castle towers over Bad Bentheim in the very north of the region. The first mentions of the castle can be traced back to the year 1050. Various armed conflicts shaped the history of the castle in the years that followed. Around 1160, the castle walls, the tower of St Catherine's Church and the powder tower were built. Many areas still show the medieval face of the castle today.
A tour of Bentheim Castle should begin at the castle park. The view over the beautiful flowerbeds to the imposing castle is fascinating. From the sandstone museum, visitors walk up a steep alley to the battery tower. Only a few metres further is the entrance to visit the upper castle. Visitors are rewarded with unique views of the Münsterland region, Bad Bentheim and the castle grounds.
In the Kronenburg, Bentheim Castle allows a look inside. The knights' hall, a bedchamber and the library display various exhibits from the history of the castle and its inhabitants. Here you can experience history at first hand.
