Cistercian and Abbey Museum in Leeden

Fancy a trip back in time? Then visit the Abbey Museum in Tecklenburg-Leeden. It is dedicated to the history of the noble ladies' convent in Leeden and its predecessor, the Cistercian convent in Leeden. The exhibition sheds light on the foundation and dissolution of the convent and provides an insight into the life of the convent's inhabitants at the time.

The museum could also be of interest to bridal couples, as the abbess's room is recognised as a wedding room by the Tecklenburg registry office.

About the life of the abbess and countess

What is there to see in the museum? The example of Abbess Sophia Johanna, Countess of Bentheim Tecklenburg, illustrates the everyday life of a noble lady in a ladies' convent. Documents relating to Caroline Louise, Countess of Schaumburg-Lippe, show the challenges faced by noble ladies after the abolition of the convent. The exhibition is also complemented by interesting pictures and models.

Special exhibits include the "Cologne ceiling", baroque fireplaces and a baroque staircase, the abbey order, ceramic toys from the 13th century and a fragment of a floor tile from the same period.

Discover the history of Leeden at the historic Stiftshaus. On Museum Sunday, we open our doors to anyone who’s interested. Gain fascinating insights into life in times gone by and learn about the history of our town.

Visitors can explore historical artefacts, documents and pictures from Leeden. Volunteers are on hand to answer questions and engage in interesting conversations.

Refreshments will also be available. Enjoy the special atmosphere of the Stiftshaus over a cup of coffee and a slice of cake, and strike up a conversation with other guests.

Admission is free. Do pop in, have a look around and enjoy a varied Sunday at the Stiftshaus Leeden.
