BahnLandLust Route

The BahnLandLust route connects the northern Ruhr region with the Münsterland in a unique way. Large sections of the route from Dorsten via Reken to Coesfeld run through the fascinating Hohe Mark Nature Park. However, the gentle landscape of western Münsterland is also characterised by fields, farmland and small farm forests. In between, charming villages and cosy farm cafés await your visit.

By train:

The RE 14 railway line runs from Dorsten in the south via Reken in a northerly direction to Coesfeld. The BahnLandLust route intersects with this railway line from time to time. This gives you the chance to get on the train in comfort if you get tired, have a breakdown or bad weather. Regardless of whether you want to cover part of the route by train or perhaps the entire return journey - rail cycling is clever and fun.

Country:

The BahnLandLust route mostly runs on quiet farm tracks along places worth seeing and experiencing: exciting industrial culture, natural beauties such as the Hervester Bruch landscape, the wild horses in the Merfelder Bruch or the Heubach meadows with wading and meadow birds, geese and amphibians as well as cultural sights along the route alternate and invite you to visit them.

Enjoyment is the order of the day in numerous country cafés and restaurants, at rest and adventure stations along the route, on a trip on the crank ferry, with a view from the observation tower on the Melchenberg and along the small river Berkel.

Wild horses in Dülmen

The last herd of wild horses in Europe lives in the forests and pastures of the Merfelder Bruch near Dülmen. With a bit of luck, you can see the proud four-legged friends in their natural environment at the weekend.

From the Melchenberg near Reken, you have a magnificent view of the Münsterland parkland. Small forests, hedges, fields and farmland spread out below you, interrupted only by stately farms. Don't miss out on a walk along the forest adventure trail.

Reken Local History Museum

Museum of local history Reken

Reken's museum of local history cannot be overlooked. The striking windmill stands freely in front of the town centre and is especially popular for wedding ceremonies. A small open-air museum has developed around the windmill over the years.

Frankenhof Wildlife Park

Frankenhof Game Park

Native animals plus bison and wolves as well as birds of prey are the focus of the Frankenhof Wildlife Park. Wonderfully embedded in a large forest, the park is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Münsterland. The great playgrounds make children's hearts beat faster.

Coal was mined at Fürst Leopold until 2001. Then a structural change began in fast motion. Numerous industrial buildings found new uses and are now home to restaurants, bars and offices. Numerous events, such as street food festivals, bring new life to the old industrial site.

The BahnLandLust route by train

The BahnLandLust route is best reached by train. The RE 14 regional express train runs from Essen via Bottrop and Gladbeck to Dorsten. From there, a section of the train travels via Reken to Coesfeld. It's not far to the next station on the way either, so you can easily return to the starting point or skip a section.

Your questions about the BahnLandLust route

The BahnLandLust route is integrated into the red and white cycle route signage as an insert sign/pictogram. The insert sign is located directly below the destination signposts. Thanks to its integration into the dense Münsterland-wide cycle route network with its junction system, orientation is particularly easy for those unfamiliar with the area.

The BahnLandLust route covers a total of 217 metres in altitude. Of these, 135 metres are uphill. The BahnLandLust route is an easy cycle tour that is easy to manage with a normal level of fitness.
