Cycle tour to places of biodiversity - with picnic

This tour is offered through the EU and state-funded project "Experience places of biodiversity in the Münsterland park landscape" of the NABU nature conservation centre Münsterland and is free of charge thanks to the funding.

The route takes you to Wolbeck Zoo on predominantly narrow roads and paved paths. A wooded area with some very old trees awaits you here. A section of the forest has not been used for forestry for almost 50 years. A walk provides background information about the area and its importance as a habitat.

The route continues towards the Werse, which flows for almost 70 kilometres from Beckum to Münster and flows into the Ems at Gelmer. Passing Albersloh, the group reaches a section of the river that has been restored to a more natural state thanks to renaturalisation measures. Shallow banks, densely overgrown islands and deadwood in the river provide a habitat for numerous species.

In addition to the illustrative examples of local biodiversity, the focus is also on the bigger picture: What role does biodiversity play in all our lives - sometimes completely unnoticed, but no less essential for that? What strategies and measures for its conservation can each and every individual participate in? Understanding the bigger picture sharpens our focus on approaches that can contribute to solutions.

The tour continues into the Hohe Ward, one of Münster's largest forest areas and also a water conservation area. The waterworks in the middle of the forest are certainly worth a photo or two before heading to Haus Heidhorn, where a well-deserved picnic of a special kind awaits.

Elias Eckel has realised a mobile kitchen concept with the Achilleeze: He and his team prepare all kinds of delicacies on the converted cargo bike, focussing on regional and seasonal ingredients. The eventful excursion ends at around 3 p.m. and it is only 4 kilometres from Haus Heidhorn to the starting point of the tour.
