The Hohe Ward is more than just a forest: due to its geological structure and history of use, it offers a variety of habitats. In addition to pine and mixed forests, you will also find heathland, dry sandy grasslands and, of course, Lake Hiltrup. Rare water birds, field crickets, wild bees, bats and many other animal and plant species feel at home here.
The area also plays an important role in Münster's drinking water supply. The entire Hohe Ward is designated as a drinking water protection area because the so-called Münsterland gravel-sand channel (a channel of gravel and sand left over from the Ice Age) acts as a natural purification filter. The water is treated at the Hohe Ward waterworks. The historic building is a listed building - but inside is state-of-the-art technology. If you are interested, you can request a group tour from Stadtwerke Münster.
