Welcome to Laer!

Laer offers you THE GOOD LIFE in the countryside near Münster. The pretty municipality is home to 6800 people, who live in the centre of Laer and the small, village-like district of Holthausen.

An idyllic place between Steinfurt and Münster

The municipality of Laer is located in the district of Steinfurt, about 15 minutes by car from the district town of Steinfurt. The town is in a rural location, but with the nearby B54 and A1 motorways it offers good conditions for commuters: Münster and Münster/Osnabrück Airport (FMO) are half an hour away by car, Osnabrück an hour. It takes a good hour to get to Dortmund and about 45 minutes to Enschede in the Netherlands.

Tip: The Münsterland is a cycling region! 4,500 kilometres of cycle paths offer you almost unlimited possibilities in the city and in the countryside: you can commute to work comfortably by bike and go on great tours with friends and family.

Living in Laer

The centre of Laer is an idyllic sight: The town hall is housed in a historic Schulzenhof, next to which stands an old warehouse building. Behind the town hall is a small park with a pond, and on the opposite bank is a historic mill. Restaurants, bakeries and an ice cream parlour are also nearby.

Most of the town's 6800 inhabitants live in the residential areas around the small centre. Three kilometres south of the centre - a five-minute drive away - is the second district, Holthausen, where about 600 people live.

Even if rental and purchase prices overall follow the general real estate trend, there are still numerous niches to be discovered in Münsterland for building, buying or renting. In rural Münsterland, the average rent per square metre is between five and seven euros, and the average purchase price for flats and houses per square metre is 2,100 euros.

On the municipality's website you can find information and contacts on current building areas with residential plots.

Shopping in Laer

You can buy groceries in several supermarkets in the Laer district, and on Thursdays there is also a small weekly market here. In the centre of town, a shoe shop, a flower shop, a toy shop and a shop for wedding and evening dresses offer a small, fine selection. If you want to do some extensive shopping, you are not far away: besides Münster and Enschede, the Designer Outlet Ochtrup (25 minutes by car from Laer) is a popular destination for bargain hunters.

Childcare and schools in Laer

There are around seven kindergartens and day care centres in the municipality, one of which is in the Holthausen district. In addition, there are day care services for children. All contact persons and further information can be found here.

The youngest pupils study in Laer at the Werner Rolevinck primary school. Secondary schools are in neighbouring towns, for example the comprehensive school in Nordwalde, the secondary school in Horstmar-Schöppingen or the grammar schools in Steinfurt.
