Cycling project strengthens cycle traffic in the German-Dutch border region

Results of the ADFC cycle tour analysis confirm leading role in cycle tourism

Great joy in the Münsterland: in the ADFC Cycle Tour Analysis 2025, which was presented on Wednesday at the International Tourism Exchange (ITB) in Berlin, the region once again ranks among the ten most travelled cycling regions in Germany. With 9th place, the Münsterland underlines its consistently strong position in a nationwide comparison - and is the only region in North Rhine-Westphalia to be among this group of leading destinations for cycling holidays.

The cycle tour analysis of the Allgemeiner Deutscher Fahrrad-Club (ADFC) is regarded as the most important barometer of the mood in German cycle tourism. Michael Kösters, Head of Tourism at Münsterland e.V., is satisfied with the result: "We have been in the top 10 for years in a challenging competitive environment." The continuous ranking is a strong signal for the sustainable quality of cycle tourism offers in the Münsterland and the committed cooperation of all stakeholders in the region. In 2024, the Münsterland took eighth place in the ADFC cycle tour analysis.

The Ems Cycle Route also confirms its strong position in the Germany-wide comparison: at 9th place, it is once again one of the most popular long-distance cycle routes. Although this also means a slight shift of one place compared to the previous year, the Ems Cycle Route remains the only long-distance cycle route from NRW in the top 10. The Ems Cycle Route, which crosses the Münsterland region, benefits significantly from the joint commitment of regional partners. Münsterland e.V. and the districts of Steinfurt and Warendorf actively support the long-distance cycle route through their participation in the EmsRadweg interest group, thereby contributing to its ongoing development and marketing.

"The results show: The Münsterland region stands for reliable quality, excellently developed infrastructure, attractive route guidance and cycling tourism hospitality," says Kösters. "This means the region remains a beacon for enjoyable cycling holidays in Germany."
