Discover the all-round carefree package for nature lovers! Rheine.Tourismus.Veranstaltungen. e.V. invites you to discover Rheine and the surrounding area.
Want a bit of outdoor fun? Running water, galloping horses at the Surenburg, avenues like in a film and simply idyllic countryside?
That's exactly what awaits you on this tour. You cycle left and right along the Dortmund-Ems Canal and get to know the treasures of the region. The first treasure awaits you in Ibbenbüren near the farming community of Dörenthe with the Loismann Botanical Gardens. A farmer with a great passion for exotic shrubs and climbing plants created a paradise here 100 years ago. The somewhat hidden site is located directly on the Dortmund-Ems Canal south of the country road to Riesenbeck. To this day, the Loismann Botanical Garden is maintained by members of the family and is one of the few remaining private historical green spaces that is also freely accessible.
It is also worth taking a short detour up to Brochterbeck, where you will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the Münsterland region. And how about a cool drink after your climb? You can get one in Brochterbeck at the Franz co-operative pub. Did you know that in the spirit of "one for all and all for one", the people of Brochterbeck acquired shares in this traditional pub and were able to save and renovate it?
A few kilometres further on, you pass the Wet Triangle, the meeting point of the Dortmund-Ems Canal and the Mittelland Canal - another highlight of this tour. While the landscape is reflected on the surface, just pause for a moment and enjoy how the boats slowly overtake you.
Almost there - but there's still one real highlight to come. In Hörstel, Surenburg Castle sits enthroned on its surrounding moats. It is the most important secular building in the Tecklenburg region and definitely worth a stopover. Back in Rheine, don't miss out on exploring the Bentlage area. Even if you have already reached your destination, the detour along the Ems to the Bentlage recreational area is still worthwhile. To the north-west, the Salinenpark in the town of Rheine with the Bentlage Monastery, the graduation tower and the NaturZoo is a destination well worth a visit.
A little tip:
route too long? No problem, because you can easily shorten it to 34.4 km along the Dortmund-Ems Canal.
