Animal action - this motto applies to the Ems city of Rheine not only because of its popular nature zoo. Rheine also offers its visitors plenty of opportunities to let off steam outside the beautifully designed zoo.
In the Bentlage recreation area, the Bentlage Monastery with its headquarters of the European Fairy Tale Society, the Bentlage Forest and the Gottesgabe Salt Works form the "Bentlager Dreiklang" (Bentlager triad) under the themes of nature, culture and salt. You should not miss a walk from the salt works to the monastery. Perhaps you will meet one of the beautiful storks on the way, which can be seen again and again in the meadows.
The half-timbered farm Hof Pöpping in Rheine-Elte with its historic collection of ancient walls worth preserving is also a nice destination for an excursion. The Apothecary Museum on the historic market square and the Falkenhof Museum in the town centre also take you back into the past.
In the here and now, golfers can hone their handicap at the "Gut Winterbrock" golf course in Rheine-Mesum. Cyclists can choose between numerous themed routes such as the Ems Cycle Path or the 100 Castles Route, and canoeists will find their ideal spot on the leisurely and beautiful Ems.
