Historical discovery tour Borken
The route connects the districts of Borken and their home towns. You leave Borken town centre with its large market square and numerous historic towers heading south. After a short time, you will arrive in the village of Marbeck. Marbeck's local history centre is located right next to the Borkener Aa. The quaint building contains exhibitions of old agricultural tools as well as woodwork and handicrafts that can be viewed. After a stop in the lovingly landscaped farm garden with its cosy bakery, the route continues westwards to the Pröbstingsee lake. The lake is the centrepiece of the Pröbsting recreation area with numerous leisure activities.
You leave the local recreation area on the Bocholter Aa in a northerly direction. You will pass Haus Pröbsting on the way. The former manor is privately owned and now serves as a private clinic. Next, after a short journey, you will reach the village of Burlo. The Mariengarden Oblate Monastery is located here. The monastery was first mentioned by name in 1398 and is now a popular destination for excursions, especially at weekends. If you are particularly interested in unspoilt nature, you should visit the Burlo-Vardingholter Venn. The approx. 75-hectare raised bog fascinates with its extraordinary flora and fauna.
The route then continues to the village of Weseke. Here, too, you will find a historic building: the Weseke home town hall is around 220 years old and exhibits old farm equipment for household and agricultural use. There is a geological garden in the grounds. You return from Weseke to Borken through the Sternbusch, an extensive park. Before you get back to the starting point of your cycle tour, you should definitely make a stop at Gemen moated castle, which is located directly on the route.
