What do museums collect, and which objects make it into the exhibition? What remains hidden away in the storeroom?

Museums display only a small part of their collections. The majority is kept in storage, documented and rarely seen. The exhibition ‘The Value of Things’ turns the spotlight on these hidden holdings.

The objects selected have scarcely been shown to the public before. Everyday objects, agricultural tools and middle-class clothing tell of worlds of life and work beyond the castle’s aristocratic history. At the same time, they raise questions about collection practices, the attribution of meaning and museum selection processes: why are some things exhibited – and others not?

The Berlin-based collection photographers Volker Weinhold and Sebastian Köpcke have staged objects from the storage depot as still lifes for the exhibition. With their Renaissance-inspired aesthetic, the photographs lend the objects a new dignity.

Interactive stations bring curatorial decisions to life: visitors can create their own still lifes, take photographs or vote on the future location of selected objects. This fosters a dialogue about the value of objects and the stories they tell.

The Castle Friends invite you to a fairy-tale evening on Thursday 24 September at 6 pm in the vaulted cellar of Lüdinghausen Castle. Brigitte Scharinger-Brill will be reading from the fairy tale ‘The Ghost in the Glass’. She will explore the fairy tale through the lens of Rudolf Geiger’s deeper insights.

Tuesdays and Fridays is the weekly market in Lüdinghausen, always from 8 am to 1 pm on the market square. Fresh fruit and vegetables, fish, meat, bread, flowers... There is a wide range on offer.

Work on Ruth-Weiss-Platz, between Olfener Straße and Seppenrader Straße, has now been completed for several weeks. The town of Lüdinghausen
is now cordially inviting all interested residents to the opening of this symbolic square between the Telgengarten and the B 235, in front of the police station, on 25 September from 11.00 am. 

The project was made possible thanks to the tremendous commitment of numerous sponsors, Ruth Weiss’s companions and political stakeholders. Together with those involved, invited guests and the interested public, the town of Lüdinghausen will officially open the new memorial site.
