Rose Garden Seppenrade

For centuries, it has been considered the queen of flowers: the rose. You can admire more than 600 varieties and around 24,000 specimens of this beautiful plant in the rose garden on the north-eastern edge of Lüdinghausen-Seppenrade.

A visit is particularly worthwhile in the summer months when the flowering season is in full swing. Depending on the variety, the main flowering period starts in early summer (June, July) and reaches a second peak in September for the more frequently flowering roses.

Visitors can explore the park on approximately 2.5 kilometres of paved paths with a number of benches. A pond with water lilies and ornamental fish has also been created. The park is open all year round and admission is free. Guided tours of the rose garden can be requested from the local heritage association.

You should also not miss the big rose festival, which takes place on the third weekend in August every year.

The history of the rose village

It's hard to believe, but where this beautiful rose garden is located was once a rubbish tip. But how did it get there?

In 1969, the district of Seppenrade won gold in the nationwide competition "Our village should become more beautiful". Inspired by this, the locals began to plant rose beds on the site of the former rubbish tip, which were then tended by the so-called Rose Women.

Today, the garden covers almost 2 hectares and is the jewel in the crown of the village. Since 1972, Seppenrade has even been able to officially call itself a "rose village". More than 110 volunteer rose women and men - under the leadership of the local history association - still look after the garden today.

The Seppenrad ammonites

Did you know that the largest ammonite in the world was found in Seppenrade? On 22 February 1895, Heinrich Ettmann discovered the fossil in a quarry in the farming community of Leversum. It is assumed that the mollusc from the Cretaceous period lived around 80 million years ago.

Eight years earlier, in 1887, a large specimen had already been discovered. You can still marvel at the larger fossil today in the LWL Museum of Natural History in Münster. There are also casts of both ammonites in the Seppenrade Rose Garden. And they are not only to be found there, but also in the Seppenrade coat of arms and the Lüdinghausen town coat of arms.
