Gravenhorst Monastery for the Castles and Burgs Day

The former Cistercian monastery of Gravenhorst in Hörstel is an imposing monument in the Westphalian monastic landscape. It was renovated by the district of Steinfurt - with support from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia - as part of the "Regionale 2004 left and right of the Ems" and is now a lively art venue with a historical feel.

The DA, Kunsthaus offers an exciting experiential space for contemporary, cross-disciplinary art to participate in and think about. Changing exhibitions and art projects, light and sound art as well as art and history education - the DA, Kunsthaus is a communicative meeting place for everyone interested in the interplay of history, art and natural space.

Archaeological finds from Gravenhorst

11:00 - 18:00

Marmelite, pipe bowls, leather shoes, but also clothes pegs: The historical presentation "Geschichte hinterm Giebel" (History behind the Gable) alternates every year to show exciting aspects of Gravenhorst's past using original objects and relics.

This year it is dedicated to the numerous and diverse artefacts from the excavations on the monastery grounds. Large-scale archaeological excavations took place at the former Gravenhorst monastery between 1999 and 2002. Numerous finds came to light that give us information about life at different times. What material remains of our culture will be preserved in the soil?

Art exhibition with picnic

The new art exhibition "Hidden Ladscapes" - Layers of the Anthropocene casts its shadow ahead. Eight participating artists from Germany and Switzerland make hidden landscapes tangible and trace the interconnectedness of natural spaces and human activity. During an exclusive guided tour with the curators, visitors will have the opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and experience the process of creating the exhibition.

At a picnic afterwards, artistic picnic blankets by An Seebach will be laid out. When folded together, the contemporary handicrafts made of outdoor materials create a large overall picture that reflects the history of the monastery and the recent art history of the project scholarships in the DA.
