Droste Museum in Hülshoff Castle

At one time, Hülshoff Castle was the centre of social life for the family of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Here she socialised with the Westphalian nobility and with relatives and friends. The Droste Museum in the castle near Havixbeck gives a vivid impression of the lifestyle of the Münster landed gentry during the Classicism and Biedermeier periods and you can find out more about the habits of the poet, who was born at Burg Hülshoff and spent her childhood and youth here. After visiting the museum, you can take a walk through the baroque park or enjoy a meal in the restaurant in the castle cellar or in the castle courtyard.

A Westphalian aristocratic family

The Droste Museum is located on the ground floor of the manor house and contains six former living rooms of the family. On display are, among other things, the small reception room, the large dining room with the family portraits and the richly stocked library. The approximately 5,000 books represent the stock of literature that the poet found in her youth.

The magnificent garden room with a view of the park can also be visited. The living rooms reflect the living conditions of an aristocratic family at the beginning of the 19th century and provide an insight into the lifestyles of Annette von Droste-Hülshoff's family. The exhibits also include individual personal items and memorabilia.

There is detailed information about the estate itself, a former knight's seat that has been in the family since 1417. Visitors can also take a personalised tour of the museum with an audio guide.

Did you know...?

A plunge into the wintry moat

Annette von Droste-Hülshoff was born two months prematurely and was therefore weak and sickly throughout her life. According to tradition, the premature birth was caused by her mother falling into the frozen castle moat. From then on, Maria Catharina Plettendorf took over the care of the seven-month-old as a wet nurse. Thanks to her care, Annette von Droste-Hülshoff survived the first months, which is why she maintained a close relationship with her throughout her life.
