City, country Castle

A varied cycle tour through the Münsterland region awaits you. The route runs for around 71 kilometres through wide landscapes, past historic buildings and to impressive places in the region. You will encounter churches, castles, museums and typical Münsterland parkland along the way. Perfect for a day trip with lots of little discoveries along the way.

The starting point of the tour is in the centre of Laer. Right at the start, it is worth taking a look at the impressive parish church of St Bartholomew. The listed building was first mentioned in a document in 1181 and is one of the town's historical landmarks. From here, the cycle route leads through the open landscape of the Münsterland. You reach Altenberge via the Holthausen district.

In Altenberge, the parish church of St. Johannes Baptist dominates the townscape. The colourful choir window inside the church is particularly worth seeing. It is also worth making a short detour to Altenberge's ice cellar, which is one of the town's special attractions.

Joie de vivre and flair in Münster

Over the next few kilometres, the landscape once again shows its quiet, rural side, although Münster is already very close by. The route follows the well-known 100 Castles Route to the castle of Münster. From there, you can quickly reach the old town centre. A walk through the historic streets takes you to Prinzipalmarkt and the impressive cathedral. If you have enough time, you can also visit one of the many museums. You could probably spend the whole day in Münster, but there are still a few kilometres and many highlights ahead of you.

Sandstone in its most beautiful form - Hülshoff Castle

The cycle tour leaves Münster via the district of Roxel and leads back into the idyllic landscape of the Münsterland. A special highlight awaits with the Hülshoff Castle. The extensive park offers beautiful views of the historic moated castle. The park is also ideal for a break or a picnic. The route then follows in the footsteps of the poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Passing the historic Vögeding House, the route leads to the Rüschhaus House. In the museum there, you can find out more about the poet's life.

Havixbeck and the Baumberg sandstone

The route continues via Nienberge in the direction of Havixbeck. The importance of sandstone as a building material in the region is immediately apparent here. In the Baumberg Sandstone Museum you can discover numerous works of art made of sandstone and learn more about the history of this material.

The route heads north for the last few kilometres. Once again, you are accompanied by the wide, tranquil landscape of the Münsterland before you finally reach the starting point of the tour again: the centre of Laer.
