Wettringen - a municipality with heart and tradition, "Dat Hiärtken van de Wiält" - as a Low German poet once put it. The municipality is located where the Aa and Vechte rivers meet, where our ancestors buried their ancestors in megalithic graves and where precious metals were dug in the Rothenberg. Wettringen is also one of the most bicycle-friendly places in Germany. In the ADFC Bicycle Climate Test 2022, the municipality was ranked first in the category of towns with up to 20,000 inhabitants.
Situated close to the Dutch border and the border to Lower Saxony, Wettringen is an ideal destination and starting point for tours and trips through the beautiful Münsterland region. Numerous signposted hiking, cycling and riding trails offer the opportunity to explore the surrounding countryside with its heath and lake landscape worth seeing on your own. The Bentlage Monastery in Rheine, Haus Welbergen in Ochtrup and Steinfurt Castle exude castle romance in the Wettringen area.
The recreational area at the Haddorf Lakes is an attraction for numerous visitors. From fishing lakes to open bathing areas and adventure playgrounds to boat hire, you can be sure of a wonderful day at the lake. Wettringen and the Haddorf Lakes are also good starting points for cycling tours to various sights in Münsterland.
