Hovestadt Castle for the Castles and Palaces Day
Hobestadt Castle in the idyllic Lippe Valley was first mentioned in a document in 1292. Because of its strategically favourable location at the Lippe crossing, it was destroyed several times in the Middle Ages, but always rebuilt. Today's moated castle with its main palace was built between 1563 and 1572 by Laurenz von Brachum, the outer castle complex in 1733 by Johann Conrad Schlaun, Westphalia's famous Baroque master builder. The Renaissance castle has a castle chapel in the Baroque antechamber and a beautiful Baroque garden.
The parks of Hovestadt Castle are a valuable testimony to a late French garden from the middle of the 18th century. The gardens, in the form in which they appear as of the summer of 1997 after completion of the three-year reconstruction work, were probably laid out between 1740 and 1760.
