Sythen Castle
Schloss Sythen in Haltern am See is a typical Westphalian castle complex: historic brick vaults, rose-covered walls, a creaking wooden portal at the gatehouse with the old brick façade and the quaint little chapel lend the thousand-year-old moated castle complex a very special charm. And yet one decisive detail is missing: the castle.
From aristocratic residence to children's convalescent home
The first documented mention of the Germanic rampart or refuge "Sitina" dates back to 758 under the then King Pippin. In the course of time, various noble families lived on the site, leaving their architectural traces behind. The red brick remains immediately show that Sythen is true Westphalian. The manor house of 1845 must have had a completely different effect, with its columned arcature and sophisticated overall impression completing the complex for around 100 years. In the middle of the 20th century, the castle was to serve a completely new purpose: The Caritas Association set up a children's convalescent home in the rooms. After various renovations in the 1970s could no longer be carried out, the entire complex was threatened with decay. The manor house was demolished in 1972. It is thanks to the Sythen shooting club that the ensemble is still preserved in its present form, because it was not until 1989 that the town of Haltern am See was able to acquire the property and finally "save" it.
