The Forum Altes Rathaus Borken - FARB for short - is the new cultural venue in the "five-tower city" in western Münsterland. Not only its location in the middle of the historic centre of Borken gives it a special unique selling point. The building also has a past dating back to the Middle Ages and a unique character. The ensemble of the old town hall and the Gothic Church of the Holy Spirit was opened in 2020 with a modern concept as a place for art, culture, tourism and history. Under one roof you will find a permanent collection on the city's history, changing exhibitions, a variety of cultural events and the tourist information office.
The exhibition house
The permanent exhibition at FARB contains three exciting perspectives on the city's history. It includes the interactive city model, personal stories in the library of memories and the object store with digital museum guide. In two large special exhibition rooms, FARB also shows changing exhibitions on art and culture.
The print workshop
Borken is a town with a graphic tradition. The FARB has its own printing workshop, which is a living space dedicated to the old craft. Surrounded by historic presses, the volunteer FARB printing team is dedicated to the "black art" of the printing craft. Here, the curious can learn more about printing techniques and the art of etching - or even get creative themselves in workshops.
The cultural events
FARB also offers regular concerts, lectures and cultural events in a very special atmosphere. In the summer months, for example, "Faktor FARB" attracts visitors to Borken with relaxed DJ sounds, chilled drinks and a changing cultural programme.
The exhibition at the FARB tells the story of Borken's rifle from its medieval beginnings to the present day. present. Fascinating background information on the history of the the festive culture, which is still an important part of rifleman an important part of the shooting culture and is actively lived in Borken. lived in Borken.
The opening will take place on 13.08.2023 from 15.00 to 17.00 hrs.
With the graphic arts project prINT, the Kulturelle Begegnungsstätte Kloster Bentlage, the FARB and the Druckvereinigung Bentlage e.V. are once again inviting exciting printmakers from the host country to the Münsterland Festival.
Already in May, the three selected Finnish artists Tiina Kivinen, Minna Louhelainen and Janne Laine were guests in the workshop of the Druckvereinigung for a joint working stay. All three are primarily dedicated to intaglio printing, but each in their own unique way.
As will be seen, they have proven that printmaking is highly valued in Finland, that there is a lot of experimentation and that the artists are extremely technically proficient. Heliogravure, mezzotint or line etching, sometimes as a collage, sometimes in combination with a monotype - in the exhibitions, both the printed works created in Bentlage and other existing works are shown, which together give an insight into the versatile possibilities of printmaking.
In cooperation with the Bentlage Print Association, Bentlage Monastery and the City of Borken.

The artists
Janne Laine | 1970
Janne Laine combines photographs mostly taken on journeys with prints, preferring heliogravure. Landscapes and their changes are a recurring theme. He searches for the perfect landscape, which is why unnecessary details disappear in his airy and aesthetically timeless depictions through prior processing. The focus is not on recognition, but on discovering something familiar.
Minna Louhelainen | 1984
"I see myself as a craft philosopher and hopeless humourist, creating, organising and presenting fragments of the world," says Minna Louhelainen, who works mainly on mixed media collages. "I find it delightful how a seemingly chaotic collection of paper fragments interacts with my thoughts and slowly crystallises into something meaningful."
Tiina Kivinen | 1971
Tiina Kivinen likes large formats - created in mezzotint technique, which is not seen too often. This elaborate method, sometimes combined with very direct drypoint strokes, can be described as a subtle rebellion against the hurry of modern life. Nature and youth are present themes, but also the "signs of the times", such as those left by youth all over the world scratched or sprayed, appear in her prints.
The event is part of the Münsterland Festival part 12.
One-woman band with Finnish stringed instrument
An expressive voice, the kantele as a Finnish plucked instrument and imaginative percussion: the one-woman band Maija Kauhanen interweaves polyrhythms with handmade beats to create touching soundscapes and convincing grooves. For her performance at the FARB Forum Altes Rathaus Borken, the fleet-footed virtuoso has brought the kantele with her, a rare playing technique in which she specialises.
Sometimes she plays with her fingers, sometimes with tiny wooden sticks, sometimes with a cello bow. Her percussion set is also unusual - it ranges from drums to pots and muffin moulds. With her singing, the multi-award-winning musician imitates instrumental sounds, drawing inspiration from the rural musical traditions of Finland and Karelia as well as the Swedish Kulning singing tradition.
