Cultural History Centre cult

The kult (culture and living tradition) in Vreden combines state-of-the-art architecture, culture, history and science under one roof. This makes it a very important cultural and historical hub for the region. In this building, old and new come together in an exciting combination. You will find a museum, a research area, historical archives, a library as well as the district's cultural and local history department. But it's not just education that's high on the agenda - lectures, concerts, exhibitions, film festivals and many other entertaining formats delight culture fans of all ages.

Wide-ranging: The museum in the kult

You can discover and learn a lot in the Museum des kults. The 1,400 m² permanent exhibition is dedicated to the theme of the border. Here you can learn more about the similarities and differences in the living and working environments of people in Westmünsterland and the Dutch region of Achterhoek.

The special exhibition is thematically colourful: from "Christmas" to "Cultural History of the Region", everything is here. You can gain an insight into the museum collections of the kult in the Schaudepot, the oldest part of the building. The tour continues to the historic farm complex, where you can immerse yourself in the historical building, living and working methods of medium-sized farms in the Westmünsterland region.

Cinema in the cult

With "Kino im kult", the kult brings film history to Westmünsterland and to the big screen! In the evenings, after the regular opening hours, a masterpiece from film history and film culture is presented in the foyer. The series of events takes place every second Thursday of the month from October to March. Our colleague Victoria couldn't miss this and watched the film "Jenseits von Eden" here. She reports in detail about her visit on the MünsterlandBlog.

A colourful autumn hustle and bustle in the centre of Vreden invites you to stroll and marvel - an experience for the whole family! To get you in the perfect mood for Hamaland Day, the popular children's flea market will take place again from 10:00 on Saturday 10 October 2026! For the last time this year, it's time to rummage through the children's rooms and attics to top up their pocket money!

Harvest thanksgiving, autumn market and car boot sale
On Sunday, Hamaland Day is expected to start at 11.00 am with an open-air church service on the meadow between the parish church, abbey church, parish administration and Walberthaus. (In case of bad weather, the service will take place in the parish church!)
Regional suppliers, hobbyists, traders and clubs await you at the market and invite you to the "Harvest and Autumn Market" in the town centre. From home-made autumn decorations and children's clothing to cosy knitwear - everyone will find something to make their heart beat faster!

The car boot sale has a permanent place in the cathedral courtyard and is an absolute crowd-puller! And off you go bargain hunting! From 11am at the Domhof.

The season ends this Sunday in the courtyard in the city park. For the last time this year, the doors of the farmhouse and Kotten Schlüters will be open from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm. The mill and the smithy can also be visited.

The cultural axis becomes a car mile!
The ADAC Classic Tour, organised by ADAC Westfalen, once again presents visitors with an impressive selection of high-calibre vehicles. Between the market square and the kult Westmünsterland, gleaming chrome car bodies are waiting to be discovered by enthusiasts! From around 2 p.m., the time has finally come: the first classic cars of the ADAC Classic Tour return! You can then admire the vehicles before the winners are honoured on the market square at around 4 pm - an absolute highlight!

Open for business
On Sunday, you can shop to your heart's content from 1 pm to 6 pm! The retailers are looking forward to your visit and will be opening their doors.

Food and drink will also be provided!
From barbecues, snacks and chips to regional delicacies and soft ice cream - let yourself be spoilt by the delicacies of the local restaurants and market operators.

4 tips for the cult

  • The kult is for everyone! It has been classified according to the criteria of the nationwide "Travel for All" designation. You can find more info here.
  • Whether classical, jazz or blues: music fans regularly get their money's worth at the kult. These include, for example, the Ahauser Schlosskonzerte, but other concert series.
  • Culture and history fans get their money's worth in Vreden. The "1st German Silhouette Museum" in the old town hall and the Miniature Shoe Museum are waiting for you. Both are only a few minutes' walk from the kult.
  • Built close to the water: The kult is located right on the Berkel. Past idyllic meadows and fields, a canoe tour leads along the river.
