Fire and water, tears and ecstasy: the Klezmer of Hannah Schlubeck and Mischpoke evokes extremes in close proximity or at the same time and all the strong feelings in between. One of the world's leading panpipe players is the special guest of the band from Hamburg, which has made a name for itself in the world music scene across Europe. The sextet creates a new, original klezmer sound that is unrivalled.
Mischpoke affectionately and self-deprecatingly uses the Yiddish word to describe a rampant, tense, welded-together clan. The band name gives an idea of the energy and liveliness that Mischpoke radiates on stage. Their klezmer style is modern and unique, incorporating influences from classical, jazz, tango and world music. "Live, it sounds like an intimate, honest exchange, just like the music of travelling peoples" (CH. Spangenberg). Mischpoke is thus in the tradition of klezmer, which has always been diverse and transcultural because it has integrated the most diverse musical idioms of those Eastern European countries in which the Ashkenazi Jews lived, at whose festivals the klezmorim, professional klezmer musicians, played.
