Crassenstein Castle
In the middle of the idyllic Münsterland parkland in the tranquil village of Wadersloh-Diestedde lies a dream castle that is unrivalled: Crassenstein Castle. The castle complex and its magnificent park are the landmark of the small town - and tell of a chequered past. Even if the castle cannot be visited, a tour around the beautiful grounds is well worthwhile. The Mühlenbach stream with its historic mill, the rattling water wheel and the quacking ducks and swans in the moat make Crassenstein a truly fairytale-like place.
Crassenstein Castle, built by the Burgrave of Stromberg, was first mentioned in a document in 1177. Over the centuries that followed, it changed hands time and again and was remodelled several times. In 1951, the St. Marien secondary school boarding school was established in the castle, followed by a boys' boarding school, later a research facility and finally an international public school. This was closed in 2023.
