The impressive Renaissance façade of the Kunsthaus-Ruchniewitz, formerly Haus Beckebans, attracts all eyes on a walk through beautiful Billerbeck. Located in the middle of the town centre, the magnificent property is considered the most beautiful and important secular building in the town and a monument of supra-local significance.
Opened in December 2020, the Kunsthaus is an oasis of beautiful things. Here, art in the form of paintings, light objects and works made of ceramics, glass and wood meet exquisite wines, fine champagne, excellent liqueurs and many other beautiful objects. A place that appeals to all the senses and invites you to relax and enjoy.
The house, which was first mentioned in a document in 1409, does not provide any information about whether it was a municipal nobleman's court or a rich burgher's house. It was not until much later that the property received its splendid cladding and the former name "Haus Beckebans". At first it served as a residence for the de Konynk and Buninck families and as a farmhouse whose rooms were shared by humans and farm animals. In 1560, the house was given a splendid brick façade in an elaborate bacon layer technique with a three-tiered gable with shell attachments.
The building was completed 90 years later with a mezzanine. The house's former name "Beckebans" dates back to the Beckebans family's 1903 inn before it was restored in 1974 to house a pharmacy, restaurant and bookshop.
Since 2019, the house has been owned by the Ruchniewitz family, who have lovingly restored this historic house and created not only an art gallery but also a meeting place under the sign "Kunsthaus-Ruchniewitz".
The house serves not only as an art house, but also as the residence of the Ruchniewitz family. Please respect the privacy of the residents and their home.
